Jannik Sinner returned to the scene of last year’s heartbreak with a statement win on Tuesday night, launching his Roland Garros campaign in commanding fashion.
The world No. 1 dismantled French wild card Clement Tabur 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 on Court Philippe-Chatrier, barely putting a foot wrong as he extended the most dominant run of his career.
Twelve months ago, the Italian squandered three championship points against Carlos Alcaraz in a crushing French Open final defeat that lingered long after the tournament ended. But if there were nerves about returning to that court, they never showed.
Instead, Sinner looked every bit the player to beat in Paris.
The 24-year-old is now riding a staggering 30-match winning streak after sweeping all five ATP Masters 1000 titles this season — Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome. His Rome triumph also made him the youngest player after Novak Djokovic to complete the Career Golden Masters.
Now, an even bigger piece of history is in sight.
Sinner arrives at Roland Garros chasing a Career Grand Slam, something achieved by only six men in the Open Era.
He will next face Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who defeated Jacob Fearnley in straight sets earlier in the day.
Sabalenka, Gauff Roll Through
In the women’s draw, Aryna Sabalenka powered into round two with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in scorching Paris heat.
Defending champion Coco Gauff also wasted little time, cruising past fellow American Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-0.
Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev suffered yet another early Paris exit, falling in five sets to Australian wildcard Adam Walton. Naomi Osaka, Emma Navarro and Felix Auger-Aliassime all advanced comfortably into the second round.
