Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin resigned from his post on Friday. He submitted his resignation to the Speaker of the Parliament (Jatiya Sansad) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed. The President has cited serious health problems as the reason for his resignation. In his resignation letter, Shahabuddin wrote – I have been suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney disease for a long time. Recently doctors have diagnosed me with a disease called Autonomic Neuropathy. Due to this disease, sometimes one suddenly becomes unconscious for some time. Considering his physical and mental condition, it is no longer possible to fulfill the responsibilities of an important constitutional post like President. There was speculation about his resignation in the Bangladeshi media for the last few days. Several reports claimed that he had tried to talk to former PM Sheikh Hasina over phone. The Prime Minister became angry after this news came out. Even after Hasina left the country, Mohammad Shahabuddin did not leave the post and took over the post of President in April 2023. The Awami League government was ousted from power after the student movement in July-August 2024. Due to that movement, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country. After this, Shahabuddin was the only constitutional officer during the Awami League government period, who remained in office even after 2 years. Alleged to have talked to Sheikh Hasina during his visit to London: He had gone to London for treatment on May 9 and returned to Dhaka on May 18. Bangladeshi newspaper reports quoted sources as saying that during this visit, the President had spoken on phone to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina living in India. As soon as the top leadership of BNP got wind of this conversation, they took it very seriously. After this, a message was sent to the President that contacting or talking to Sheikh Hasina is not acceptable in the current political environment and she should resign from her post. The newspaper Prothom Alo also quoted a senior government official as saying that the government was angry that the President had recently tried to contact Sheikh Hasina again. The Daily Star, quoting a senior BNP leader, had written that the alleged phone conversation between Shahabuddin and Sheikh Hasina was not the only reason for the resignation. Actually Sheikh Hasina has announced to return to Bangladesh in December this year. Due to this the political environment of the country has become more sensitive. Now the Speaker will fulfill the responsibility of the President. According to Article 54 of the Constitution of Bangladesh, the Speaker of Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed will hold the responsibility of the Acting President until the new President is elected. After this, the Parliament will have to elect a new President within 90 days, who will complete the remaining term of the current term. The tenure of Mohammad Shahabuddin was to last till April 2028. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed had gone to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, for treatment on July 19. His return was scheduled for Sunday, but he decided to cut short his tour and return to Dhaka two days early. Talking to reporters at Dhaka airport, he had said that he was not aware of the President’s decision to resign as he was abroad.
