Even George Russell’s biggest critics would probably admit one thing right now: the Briton’s luck this season has been brutal.
And standing beside his stricken Mercedes in Montreal on Sunday night, Russell looked completely drained by it all.
After opening the season with victory in Shanghai, the Mercedes driver has endured one setback after another, while teammate Kimi Antonelli has exploded into title contention with four straight wins and a commanding championship lead.
But Canada finally seemed like Russell’s weekend.
After narrowly missing the podium in Miami, the Brit bounced back in style with a Sprint victory and a stunning pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix. For the first time in weeks, momentum appeared to be shifting back in his favour.
Then came another crushing blow.
Power Failure Ruins Russell’s Race
Russell was leading after an intense wheel-to-wheel battle with Antonelli when disaster struck on Lap 30. A power unit failure abruptly ended his race and left his Silver Arrow parked at the side of the circuit.
The frustration boiled over immediately.
As he climbed out of the car, Russell angrily threw his headrest onto the track — an act that later landed him before the stewards.
Officials deemed the incident potentially dangerous and handed the six-time Grand Prix winner a suspended €5,000 fine, provided a similar offence does not happen again within the next 12 months.
But the punishment was probably the least of Russell’s concerns.
“Disbelief,” Russell said when asked to describe his emotions after the race.
“It feels like somebody doesn’t want me to fight or compete for this championship.”
“Three out of the last five races there’s just been something really going against us. [I’m] just a bit lost for words right now.”
Antonelli Stretches Championship Lead
While Russell was left staring at another missed opportunity, Antonelli went on to claim his fourth consecutive Grand Prix victory, further tightening his grip on the title race.
The 19-year-old now leads Russell by 43 points heading into Monaco, with the momentum inside Mercedes increasingly swinging toward the Italian rookie.
For George, the pace is clearly there. But the luck simply hasn’t been.
