Reacting to the incident, senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia called it ‘a damning indictment of Punjab’s Home Minister and temporary DGP Punjab Police’.

A Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was shot dead by two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants near Hamja village in the Majitha Assembly constituency of Amritsar district on Sunday, police said. The miscreants fired four shots of bullets at the officer.
The deceased officer has been identified as Joga Singh, a resident of Ganike Bangarh village. According to police, Singh was travelling to duty on a scooter and was in uniform when the attackers allegedly intercepted him and opened fire before fleeing the spot.
His body, bearing a gunshot injury, was later found near the Fatehgarh Churian-Majithia road.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Rural), Amritsar, Suhail Mir Qasim said police received information about the incident early Sunday morning, following which a team led by the Station House Officer of Majitha police station reached the spot. A forensic team was also called in to examine the crime scene.
Police have launched an investigation and are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify and trace the attackers. The body was later shifted to the Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.
“We are exploring all angles, including personal enmity, road rage, or any other possible motive,” the SSP said after visiting the site.

Majithia further said, “After repeated attacks on police stations, now even the uniform meant to provide security is being gunned down openly in a sensitive INDO-PAK border area.”

Targeting the state administration, he alleged that “the police political nexus and the complete collapse of law and order in this highly sensitive border belt have pushed Punjab towards fear, extortion and targeted killings.”
The Akali leader also demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the temporary DGP, DSP Majitha and the SHO concerned over the incident.
