They should debate, argue, vote and run the government. It sounds like a science fiction movie, but efforts have started to make it a reality on a small island in the Philippines. This experiment is being done by British tech entrepreneur Dan Thomson. He has declared an island with an area of 3.6 square kilometers in the Palawan archipelago as a micronation in the name of his AI company ‘Sensay’. Micronations are self-proclaimed small countries or principalities, whose rulers call themselves independent nations, but do not receive international recognition. Thomson has formed a council of 17 AI bots to run the government here. These have been prepared on the basis of personality, writings and thoughts of leaders like Gandhi, Churchill, Eleanor Roosevelt, Marcus Aurelius, Sun Tzu and Mandela. It is claimed that these AI leaders will take only objective decisions, free from personal greed, lobbying and political interests. E-residents will be able to submit proposals here. The AI Council will discuss them and take a decision through voting. However, as much as there is enthusiasm about this experiment, there is also an equal amount of fear. Thomson himself admits that things could go in the wrong direction. He said, if AI gathers weapons and starts attacking neighboring islands, the situation will be very bad. However, they consider it extremely unlikely. For this reason, they have also created ‘Human Override Assembly’, so that in case of any danger, there can be human intervention. At present only one caretaker lives on this island, but in future there are plans to build 30 villas here. The residency program here will launch in 2027. 12 thousand people have shown interest in becoming e-citizens here. Thomson believes that the main reason for this is the decreasing trust of people in governments. Many applicants are curious about technology, while some are frustrated by traditional politics and corruption. Critics are saying that the expectation of AI running the government is absurd. Critics are considering this model as dangerous and undemocratic. AI expert Alondra Nelson of Oxford University says that AI is making new mistakes every day. Expecting him to run the government is absurd. The system created by one person and his company cannot be called democratic. Despite this, Thomson’s faith remains intact. They say that in future the governments of the world will adopt AI based systems.
