The Supreme Court will give its verdict today in the case related to the increasing number of stray dogs and incidents of dog bites across the country.
The bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria had reserved the decision after the completion of the hearing on January 29. During this, the states, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) had presented their arguments.
In the last hearing, the court had said – If any attack by stray dogs causes injury or death, then the responsibility of the dog feeders along with the municipal body can also be fixed.
The court said, ‘It would be wrong to consider our comments as a joke. We are serious. The court will not shy away from fixing responsibility because the failure of the local administration has come to light in the current system.
The court had taken suo motu cognizance last year
This case started on July 28, 2025. The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognizance of the attacks and deaths caused by stray dogs in the country. On August 11, 2025, the court had ordered to capture all the stray dogs from Delhi-NCR within 8 weeks and send them to shelter homes. Due to protests against this, the court changed its order on 22 August 2025.
The court said that dogs which do not have rabies and are not aggressive, can be released after sterilization and vaccination in the same area from where they were caught.
Later the scope of the case was extended to the entire country. On November 7, 2025, the court, in an interim order, had asked the states and NHAI to remove stray animals from around highways, hospitals, schools and other institutions.
