There is a saying in the Punjab province of Pakistan ‘Jinne Lahore nahi vekhya, o Jamia hi nahi’ (One who has not seen Lahore, was not born). Lahore, located about 50 kilometers from Amritsar, is returning to its roots after being in the grip of Islamization for decades. Within two months, Islamic names of 9 places in Lahore have been reverted to their original Hindu or British heritage. Among these, Islampura will now be officially known by its old name Krishnanagar and Babri Masjid Chowk will now be known officially by the old Jain Mandir Chowk. Their boards have also been installed. The special thing is that no fundamentalist front could be opened there against this change. According to Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz, all eight gates of Parkota City Lahore, including Delhi Gate, will also be renovated. According to sources, in the second phase of name change, original names can also be announced in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces of Pakistan. Lakshmi Chowk… part of our heritage Saad Malik, lecturer at Beaconhouse University, Lahore, says – This is really a pleasant change. I always called it Lakshmi Chowk, because that was the name my father used to call it. Saad says that the Municipal Corporation may have named it Maulana Zafar Ali Chowk in its papers, but for me and many people like me, Laxmi Chowk is a part of the heritage which has nothing to do with the name of Zafar Ali Khan. Lakshmi Chowk is a name associated with generations. Jain Temple… Maulana Wajid Qadri of Anarkali area near Jain Temple believes that Islam has no problem with any temple or Gurudwara. Jain Mandir Chowk was renamed Babri Masjid Chowk in the 1990s. This was a political decision. We never called it Babri Masjid Chowk. We have to understand that the ancestors who had given these Hindu names were also Muslims, and this did not harm their faith. Everything you need to know: Many names were changed during Nawaz’s reign…daughter is now correcting them; Imran Khan was reluctant to change his name. When did the era of name change start? Former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif and Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz called a high-level meeting on March 19. Lahore Heritage Area Revival (LHAR) project was discussed in it. It was decided to name the new names of Lahore again after the old Hindu or British heritage era. What did Nawaz and Maryam have to say? Nawaz Sharif said that we should learn from Europe. They do not tamper with historical names. The old names of Lahore are our history, we have to save it, not change it. Maryam said that the history of Lahore is its identity. Old names and buildings are proof of this. What was the attitude of the fundamentalists? The Maryam government has banned Tehreek-Labbaik-Pakistan (TLP), notorious for creating chaos on the streets in the name of fundamentalism. Therefore there was no opposition. Lashkar-e-Taiba has also not opposed keeping the original name. In whose era did the name change take place? The name changing exercise in Lahore took place in the 1990s after the demolition of the Babri Masjid structure. During that period, there were governments of Nawaz Sharif, then Benazir and Pervez Musharraf at the centre. The era of name change did not happen during the time of Imran Khan, who was PM from 2018 to 2022.
