Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant on Friday narrated an anecdote related to his personal life. During the hearing of the case, the CJI told how a judge had scolded him and asked him to leave the chamber. This incident was narrated by Justice Surya Kant during the hearing on the petition of the Judicial Service applicant.

Prerna Gupta was presenting her views on the demand for re-examination of the magistrate exam copy, when the CJI interrupted, “Let me tell you my personal story. I hope that after this you will go happily, because we cannot accept your petition.”

He explained that there are two ways to become a judge. First, by joining the judicial service as a magistrate, gradually get promotion and then reach the High Court and if possible the Supreme Court. Second, to practice law, make a name for yourself at the bar and later get directly appointed as a judge at a higher level.

The judge told me to get out of my chamber.

Justice Surya Kant told that in 1984, when he was a final year law student, his dream was to become a judicial officer. He had passed the written examination and was called for interview.

CJI told that by the time the results of the examination came, he had started practicing law in Punjab and Haryana High Court. The interview panel included the same senior judge in whose court he had recently argued two important cases.

He told that one of those cases was ‘Sunita Rani vs. Baldev Raj’, in which he had appealed in the matter of matrimonial dispute and the decree of divorce given by the District Judge on the grounds of schizophrenia (a mental illness) was set aside by the senior judge.

Before the interview began, the judge called me into his chambers and asked, “Do you want to become a judicial officer?”

I replied, “Yes.”

On this the judge immediately said, “Get out of my chamber.”

CJI told that at that time he felt that his dream was broken and his career was over. He came out of the chamber trembling.

But the next day the same judge called him again and said, “If you want to become a judge, you can become one, but my advice is that do not become a judicial officer. The Bar is waiting for you.”

Justice Surya Kant told that after this he did not give any interview. Initially he did not tell this even to his parents, because he was afraid that they would be disappointed. He then decided to focus entirely on law.

The CJI smilingly asked the petitioner, “Now tell me, did I take the right decision or the wrong one?”

In the end, Justice Surya Kant advised Prerna Gupta to look towards the future and said, “There is a lot of potential in the Bar.”

Justice Surya Kant is the 53rd CJI of the country.
