Now small-sized drones are flying at low altitude and delivering goods from across the border. These drone operators provide an easy way to deliver arms, ammunition or drugs into Indian territory without crossing the border.

Many such cases have come to light in areas belonging to Punjab, Jammu and Rajasthan. In view of this change, the Border Security Force (BSF) has made a major change in its strategy. Now the soldiers are no longer just patrollers on the ground, but they also have to monitor the skies and drone Preparations are also being made to respond to the threat. This change became necessary because in modern border security, drones are no longer just a means of surveillance. They have also become a means of gathering intelligence, delivering weapons and carrying out attacks.

That’s why BSF is emphasizing on mobile anti-drone shield. This system is not kept tied to any one place. When drone activity increases in an area or a sensitive location comes under threat, it can be rapidly transported there.

Border outposts, weapon warehouses, populated areas or operational zones can be given additional security as per requirement. Counter-drone systems typically have the ability to identify, track signals, jam and disable drones.

BSF is training the soldiers in detectors, jammers and both soft-kill and hard-kill options. Soft-kill involves electronically disrupting the drone’s communications or navigation systems, while hard-kill involves physically downing or destroying the drone. The combination of both methods helps in immediately responding to any kind of UAV threat at the border.

Drone Warfare School in Tekanpur: New generation ready

Taking the drone threat seriously, BSF has established a School of Drone Warfare in its academy located in Tekanpur, Madhya Pradesh. Courses like Drone Commando and Drone Warrior are being run here. The soldiers are taught practical drone flying, maintenance, technical knowledge and operational use. Officers are given strategic and command level training.

The training is divided into three main parts – Flying and Piloting, Tactics and Research and Development. With this, BSF is not only preparing operators but also experts who can understand the complete strategy of using and dealing with drones. Actual field conditions have also been included in the training.

Drone operation is taught in different weather, wind, electromagnetic interference and geographical challenges of border areas. With this, soldiers are able to take better decisions on the border.

The large-scale use of drones during Operation Sindoor gave a clear message to the security agencies – future wars will not be fought only on land. The Russia-Ukraine war has also shown how big an impact low-cost drones can have on the battlefield. The challenge on India’s western border is more serious because the use of drones here is not limited to military threat only.

They are also being used for smuggling of arms, ammunition and narcotics. Therefore BSF has to work simultaneously under border security, anti-narcotics operations and anti-terrorism strategy. After this experience, BSF has further intensified its drone training and counter-drone capabilities.

Intelligence and forensics with technology

Intercepting or shooting down a drone is only part of the problem. It is more important to understand the entire network behind it. Forensic analysis of the recovered drone can tell where it came from, who flew it and who obtained the material. BSF has worked towards setting up drone forensic labs in Delhi and Amritsar.

Now the fight against drones on the border is no longer limited to just look and shoot. This has become a complete series of detection, tracking, neutralization and forensic intelligence.
