Sensex Today: Nifty50 and Sensex snapped a three-day winning streak as IT stocks weighed. Global equities declined as the failed US-Iran talks stoked worries about a prolonged tension in West Asia.
Broader markets outperformed the benchmark indices. The Nifty MidCap and the Nifty SmallCap ended 0.19 per cent and 1.13 per cent higher, respectively. Sector-wise, the Nifty IT emerged as the worst-performing sectoral index. The Nifty Financial Services and the Nifty Auto also underperformed.
The US extended its ceasefire with Iran, with President Donald Trump saying the pause would remain in place until Tehran presents a unified resolution proposal. He described the Iranian government as “seriously fractured” in a post on Truth Social.
However, Trump indicated that the blockade at the Strait of Hormuz will continue, keeping supply-side risks intact. The extension followed reports that US Vice President JD Vance was unable to hold talks with Iranian officials after Tehran declined to participate in further negotiations.
Global Markets
Global cues remained weak. Most Asian markets traded lower, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index down 1.11% and South Korea’s KOSPI falling 0.54%. Japan’s Nikkei 225, however, bucked the trend to rise 0.83%.
On Wall Street, the Nasdaq Composite and Dow Jones Industrial Average both closed 0.59% lower overnight, while the S&P 500 declined 0.63%.
In commodities, Brent Crude slipped 0.45% to around $98.04 per barrel during the Asian session as traders assessed the outlook for US-Iran talks following the ceasefire extension. Meanwhile, safe-haven demand lifted precious metals, with gold and silver futures rising 1.07% and 1.54%, respectively.
