Nitin Gadkari attended the HT Auto Leaderboard Awards on Wednesday.
Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Wednesday that his dream is to make India’s auto sector number-1 in the world. He said that India is currently in third place after America and China.
Gadkari said this at the first HT Auto Leaderboard Awards of 2026. He said that India’s auto sector contributes more than Rs 22.75 lakh crore to the economy.
Emphasis on clean technology and electric vehicles
Gadkari reiterated the government’s focus on cleaner powertrain and fuel technology. He said that with the changing mindset of customers, electric vehicles are becoming a big segment of the Indian auto industry.
There was a record increase in sales of electric passenger vehicles and electric two-wheelers in FY26. He described this as a sign of positive attitude of customers towards battery-powered electric vehicles.
Gadkari appealed to the auto industry to consider ways to reduce the price of electric vehicles.
Auto sector increased after 1990
Before 1991: There were strict government regulations on the production of vehicles, foreign investment was prohibited and options were extremely limited.
After 1991: Licenses ended, foreign companies entered and vehicles became cheap and modern.
Today’s situation: India has now become the third largest automobile market in the world after America and China.
