Indian pilot Smit saved the flight from Dubai to Israel from crashing. Smit was attacked with a knife by his fellow pilot. Despite being injured, Smit continued to fight him and was overpowered with the help of other passengers.

The incident took place on a flydubai flight at around 9 am on Wednesday. There were 180 people on board the plane. Israeli officials said the co-pilot who attacked Smit was an Omani citizen.

A senior Israeli official said that the pilot’s courage averted a major incident. Otherwise an incident like 9/11 in America in 2001 could have happened.

After controlling the attacker, the passengers sitting in the plane celebrated by clapping. There were mostly Israeli passengers on this flight.

In the video, injured Captain Smit is seen wearing an oxygen mask. An Israeli dentist present on the plane treated him.

Captain Smit has been a pilot in SpiceJet for 11 years.

Prior to flydubai, Smit worked at SpiceJet for over 11 years. Here he flew more than 9500 hours. Of these, more than 6400 hours were as the chief pilot i.e. pilot-in-command of the aircraft.

He joined flydubai in June 2022. According to his LinkedIn profile, he has more than 13 years of experience flying commercial aircraft. He has flown about 9750 hours on Boeing 737 aircraft.

Apart from this, he also used to train the pilots, test them and guide them during their work.

Captain had told in the podcast – The thought of becoming a pilot came to my mind while studying management.

In October last year, Captain Smit did a podcast with a YouTube channel named CS Jalak Mehta. During this he said,

After schooling, I studied management to take over the family business. But during this time I went to a seminar related to aviation, it was there that I thought of becoming a pilot for the first time.

He further said, ‘My first commercial flight was from Bangalore to Delhi.’

Know what happened in the plane in 10 points

1. The plane first sent code 7700, which indicates emergency. A few seconds later a code 7500 was sent, indicating a hijack.
2. According to flight radar, the plane dropped from 34 thousand to 16,600 feet in just a few minutes. After this its route was diverted towards Tabuk.
3. There was a fight between the pilot and co-pilot. The reason for the fight is not clear yet.
4. According to Israeli media, the Omani pilot tried to turn the plane towards the ground. The passengers sitting in front reached the cockpit and controlled him.
5. According to the passengers, two more pilots in plain clothes were present in the plane. One of them took control of the plane.
6. A passenger reported that he heard screams from the cockpit. A pilot was found injured there, with a folding knife in his hand and blood scattered in the cockpit.
7. The condition of the injured pilot was critical. An Israeli dentist present on the plane treated him and helped save his life.
8. After the hijack alert, the Israeli Air Force dispatched fighter jets. PM Netanyahu held a meeting with security officials.
9. The plane landed at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. Israel also closed its airspace for some time.
10. Israeli agencies are also investigating the possibility of a terrorist attack. The Shin Bet, Mossad, the army and the transport ministry are involved in the investigation.
