The CBSE Class 10 results 2026 were announced on Wednesday. Lakhs of students now face one of the most crucial decisions of their academic life – selecting the right stream. Although marks influence this choice, they should not be the sole deciding factor.
After Class 10, students generally choose from three main streams – Science, Commerce, and Arts (Humanities). Each stream leads to different career options and demands specific skills and interests.
Science can help students become a doctor, engineer, scientist, or pursue a career in IT. Commerce can help them pursue a career in CA, CS, banking, or business. Arts also offers many promising options, such as journalism, UPSC, law, design, and social work.
Understand Your Interests Before Choosing A Stream
First, it is important to recognise your interests. If you enjoy math, science, and technical subjects, science may be the right stream for you. If you are interested in business, accounting, and financial matters, commerce might suit you better. If you like history, society, politics, or writing, arts could be a good option. Choosing a stream just to follow others or stay with friends is a major mistake.
Do Marks Really Matter?
Schools often use marks as a benchmark to set eligibility criteria for different streams. For example, many schools insist on higher scores – especially in Mathematics and Science – for admission to the Science stream.
However, marks only show how a student performed in an exam, not their true potential or interest. A student with average marks in Science can still do well in it if they have genuine curiosity and commitment.
Students scoring above 85–90% usually have the freedom to choose any stream. Although many select Science because of its perceived prestige, it is important to consider whether they truly enjoy subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Students with marks between 70–85% can explore both Commerce and Arts, depending on their strengths. Those interested in numbers, business, or economics may find Commerce a good fit. Students who enjoy social sciences, languages, or creative subjects may be better suited to Arts.
Students scoring below 70% should not feel disheartened. Arts offers a variety of promising career options and has gained significant recognition in recent years. Skill-based and vocational courses are also valuable alternatives.
One must note that choosing a stream only on the basis of marks, peer pressure, or parental expectations can lead to stress and lack of interest.
The best way to choose a stream is through self-reflection. Students should identify which subjects they enjoy studying the most.
Science: Choose this if you are interested in biology, solving challenging problems, and making new discoveries.
Commerce: Choose this if you are interested in markets, business, the stock market, and working with numbers.
Arts: Choose this if you are creative and drawn to areas like society, law, politics, or communication.
Science is not limited to engineering and medicine; it also includes emerging fields like artificial intelligence (AI) and environmental science. Commerce leads to opportunities in finance, business management, economics, and entrepreneurship. Humanities provides a strong foundation for Law, Social Sciences, International Relations, and Creative Industries.
