Bharatiya Janata Party’s Samrat Choudhary is set to be sworn as the next chief minister (CM) of Bihar, and the first from his party, as ally Janata Dal United’s supremo Nitish Kumar announced his resignation on Tuesday. Choudhary will take oath as the CM at Bihar Lok Bhavan on Wednesday.

While Choudhary was Kumar’s deputy CM, who will be Choudhary’s deputies? Who else will take oath with him? All we know so far on the possible list of ministers.

Nitish Kumar’s exit paved way for first BJP CM of Bihar

The BJP is the single largest party in the 243-strong Bihar assembly with 89 MLAs.

Samrat Choudhary was elected the BJP legislature party leader on Tuesday. Kumar, who heads the JD(U) and became a Rajya Sabha MP last week, resigned as the chief minister earlier in the day.

Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, whom the BJP parliamentary board named central observer for the legislature party leader’s election, said, “Samrat Choudhary was unanimously elected as the BJP’s legislature party leader.”

Choudhary expressed gratitude to the central leadership of the BJP for entrusting him with the responsibility of Leader of the BJP’s legislature party in Bihar. “For me, this is not merely a position, but an opportunity to serve the people of Bihar and to fulfill their trust and aspirations. I resolve to live up to the expectations of every citizen with complete dedication, commitment, and integrity,” he said in a post on X.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji and the guidance of our national president Nitin Nabin ji, I will continuously strive to take Bihar to new heights of development, good governance, and prosperity,” he wrote.

Choudhary joined the BJP in 2017 after spending around 12 years in the RJD and JD(U). The BJP MLA from Tarapur will now be elected the leader of the NDA legislature party.

Where will the oath ceremony be held?

Administrative preparations for the oath ceremony are almost complete. The oath ceremony will be held at Bihar Lok Bhavan.

Will Nitish’s son Nishant be Samrat Choudhary’s deputy?

JDU National Executive President Sanjay Jha has clearly indicated that Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumaris now playing an active role in the party. JDU insiders say that Nishant Kumar is currently working on a strategy to understand the organisation rather than seek direct entry into power.

According to close sources, Nitish Kumar too doesn’t want Nishant to rush into a high-profile position. He believes that both time and experience are essential to building a lasting political presence. Following a statement by JDU MP Sanjay Jha, it has become clear that Nishant Kumar may soon tour across Bihar. Experts are viewing this as a “soft launch” for Nishant Kumar.

Sources indicate that Nishant has reportedly stated clearly that he will not accept the position without becoming a member of any House. It would be better if he becomes Deputy Chief Minister after winning the election and becoming an MLA, News18 Hindi reported.

However, it is being said that senior JDU leaders and his close relatives are continuously trying to persuade Nishant to take up the post of deputy CM.

This development has posed a new challenge for the JDU as to who should be given the post. However, sources also indicate that senior JDU leaders will persuade Nishant Kumar.

Who will take oath with Samrat Choudhary?

Along with Samrat Choudhary, senior leaders Bijendra Prasad Yadav and Vijay Kumar Choudhary will also take oath as ministers. As of now, sources say that Bijendra Prasad Yadav and Vijay Kumar Choudhary may become Deputy CMs. This is considered to be part of the initial cabinet of the new government.

Sources say that efforts are being made to maintain caste and regional balance in the cabinet. Many new faces may get a chance, while some experienced leaders will also be included. However, the full list of ministers has not been officially confirmed yet.

Who else will be included in the cabinet?

Bihar’s new government will have a BJP CM and two Deputy CMs — Bijendra Prasad Yadav and Vijay Choudhary — from the JDU quota. Other faces joining the cabinet may take oath as ministers on another date.

Possible ministers from the JDU quota

Shravan Kumar, Ashok Choudhary, Lesi Singh, Madan Sahni, Jama Khan, Sunil Kumar.

Possible ministers from the BJP quota

Vijay Kumar Sinha, Mangal Pandey, Ramkripal Yadav, Dilip Jaiswal, Shreyasi Singh, Lakhendra Paswan, Rama Nishad, Pramod Kumar Chandravanshi, Arun Shankar Prasad, Sanjay Singh ‘Tiger’.

Who could be ministers from LJPR, HAM, RLM?

NDA’s ally parties are also likely to get a place in the cabinet. Possible names include Santosh Kumar Suman (HAM), Sanjay Paswan (LJP), Sanjay Kumar Singh (LJP), Deepak Prakash (RLM).

Focus on social balance

Political experts believe that this time special attention will be given to caste and regional balance while forming the cabinet. The cabinet may be formed keeping in mind OBC, upper caste, Dalit, and women representation. There may also be a mix of young and experienced leaders.
