Polling for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections began on Sunday, witnessing a strong voter turnout across the state. The process has remained peaceful so far, with nearly 22 per cent of voters casting their ballots within the first two hours. Long queues were seen outside polling stations since early morning, reflecting high enthusiasm among the electorate. Officials said voting commenced at 7 am and will continue till 4 pm under tight security, with no untoward incidents reported.

A total of 28 seats are being contested in the council elections. Voting is taking place at 1,257 polling stations across eight districts of Tripura. As per official data, 9,62,547 voters are eligible to vote, including 4,81,959 men, 4,80,582 women and six transgender voters. In all, 173 candidates are in the fray, comprising 165 men and eight women.

The TTAADC is an autonomous body responsible for governing tribal areas in the state. It plays a crucial role in local administration and development, particularly for indigenous communities. As a result, these elections carry significant political importance, influencing governance and policy decisions in these regions.

The elections have turned into a multi-cornered contest, with several major parties in the fray. Key contenders include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), its ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), Tipra Motha Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), and the Indian National Congress. The outcome is expected to reflect the current political sentiment in the tribal regions.

Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, a prominent tribal leader and BJP ally, expressed confidence in the democratic process and urged people to vote in large numbers. He highlighted the importance of the elections in protecting the rights and future of indigenous communities.

Meanwhile, West Tripura District Election Officer Dr Vishal Kumar said polling has been largely smooth across the region. “This election has been going on smoothly since 7 am… In 99% of the places, no incidents have occurred, and people are voting freely and fairly, peacefully,” he said, adding that a high turnout is expected by the end of the day.

Earlier, Chief Minister Manik Saha also appealed to voters to exercise their democratic right and contribute towards building a stronger future for the state’s tribal communities.
