‘Cyberabad’, the hi-tech area of Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, is now on the threshold of big change. Cyberabad Police and the ‘Society for Cyberabad Security Council’ (SCSC) have prepared a masterplan inspired by the ‘London Transport Model’ for this area, which often faces traffic jams and chaos during school drop-offs. The aim of the new ‘Student Mobility System’ is to eliminate traffic jams, ensure the safety of children, reduce stress for parents and also create employment opportunities for the local community. Cyberabad Police Commissioner Dr. M. Ramesh says, ‘A major part of the traffic in Hitech City and surrounding areas is of children going to school and private vehicles dropping them. Most schools in the area do not provide their own bus service. Due to this, parents drop their children in private vehicles and traffic pressure increases. Dr. Ramesh said, the police is developing a special app. This digital platform will unite parents, schools and bus operators. However, the name of this ‘game-changer’ app is yet to be decided, as the officials want to choose an effective name after taking the opinion of all the stakeholders. The most ambitious part of the plan is to increase the number of buses. A target has been set to increase the fleet of currently running 3 thousand school buses to 15 thousand. Police believe that when students use this shared bus service instead of unsafe private vehicles or parents’ vehicles, the burden on private vehicles will be reduced. It is estimated that this will reduce traffic jams by 30%. Dr. Ramesh says, ‘There is also a focus on social participation in the project. Women of local self-help groups, Asha and Anganwadi workers will be included in this. The buses will have permanent attendants as well as ‘home pick-up’ facility, thereby creating employment and additional income opportunities for local women. Strict police verification and special training of drivers and attendants will be necessary for the safety of children. There will be routing through AI and connectivity with the police control room. To make the system hi-tech, the help of AI and GIS (Geographic Information System) is being taken. AI will analyze which students from which area are going to which school. Smart routing will be done on the same basis. With this, common bus routes can be prepared for several schools in the same area. This will save both time and fuel. The security of the system will be based on London’s ‘Transport for London’ model. Live monitoring of buses will be done from CCTV and command and control center. It will have direct connectivity with the police control room so that immediate action can be taken in case of emergency.
