Commercial LPG Supply Boost: The Uttarakhand government has rolled out a revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for commercial LPG distribution to manage rising demand and ensure supply stability, replacing the earlier guidelines.

Food and Civil Supplies Secretary Anand Swaroop said the state’s push for PNG adoption has helped secure an additional 6% quota for commercial LPG. Along with a 20% allocation from the Centre, Uttarakhand’s total quota has now risen from 40% to 66%. The updated SOP is designed to bring greater transparency and prioritisation in distribution, especially to avoid shortages during high-demand periods such as the Char Dham Yatra, peak tourism season, and industrial activity.

Under the new framework, oil marketing companies will continue supplying LPG based on their market share, while keeping District Magistrates informed about distribution.

The SOP earmarks a daily supply of 6,310 cylinders across categories. Hotels and resorts have been allotted 1,500 cylinders (24%) to cater to tourist inflow, while restaurants and dhabas will receive 2,000 cylinders (32%). Government guest houses are allocated 300 cylinders (5%), while homestays, self-help groups, and dairy units get 200 cylinders each (3% each). Priority industries, including pharmaceuticals and hospitals, have been assigned 1,250 cylinders (20%).

Regionally, Dehradun accounts for the largest share at 31%, followed by Haridwar and Nainital at 13% each, with the remaining quota distributed across districts based on demand patterns.

The SOP also introduces a dedicated provision for weddings, allocating 660 cylinders (10%) per day. Each event can use a maximum of two commercial cylinders, subject to prior approval from the District Magistrate or an authorised official.

Once approvals are verified, distributors will issue temporary connections, after which the allocation will revert to the general pool to prevent misuse. Dehradun and Nainital have been given the highest share of the wedding quota at 176 cylinders each, while industrial allocations remain concentrated in Dehradun, Haridwar, and Udham Singh Nagar.
