GIFT Nifty signalled a weak start for domestic markets, with the Nifty50 likely to extend losses at the open, tracking a global equity sell-off amid concerns that the prolonged US-Iran conflict could fuel slower growth and higher inflation. The futures were trading at 22,606.7, down 195.7 points.
Global markets under pressure
Asian markets declined sharply, led by South Korea, as the conflict involving the US, Iran and Israel entered its fourth week. The Kospi dropped as much as 5.3%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 and China’s CSI 300 were down 4.36% and 1.2%, respectively.
Overnight, US markets also ended lower. The S&P 500 slipped 1.06%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.67%, reflecting rising investor caution.
Oil rises on supply concerns
Crude oil prices moved higher in Asian trade as supply risks intensified following Yemen’s Houthi rebels formally joining the conflict with missile strikes on Israel.
Brent crude’s March contract rose 3.36% to $116.12 per barrel on the Intercontinental Exchange.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington could target Iran’s Kharg Island, while also suggesting that a ceasefire could be reached quickly.
Precious metals slip
Despite geopolitical tensions, precious metals saw some profit booking. Gold and silver futures were down 1.30% and 1.32%, respectively.
