US President Donald Trump addressed the Gaza ‘Board of Peace’ Charter announcement on Thursday, where he highlighted his peacekeeping record across the world, including in Gaza, and said the board will work in conjunction with the United Nations.
Before signing the founding charter of the Gaza Peace Board, Trump said there were 59 countries were involved in peace efforts in the Middle East. He said the board has the chance to be one of the most consequential bodies ever created, calling it an “enormous honour” to serve as its Chairman.
“Last October, we released a plan for the permanent end to the conflict in Gaza, and I’m pleased to say that our vision was unanimously adopted by the United Nations Security Council late last year. Under Phase 1 of this plan, we have painstakingly maintained that the Gaza ceasefire delivered record levels of humanitarian aid,” he said, thanking some of the countries that are part of the efforts.
“We have secured the release of all 20 living hostages… There were 20 remaining living hostages. We got hundreds out, but the last 20, I said that was going to be a tough one. We had also about 28 that were dead, but the parents wanted them just as though they were living,” he added.
‘Hamas Must Disarm’
Trump also affirmed that Hamas must disarm under the Gaza ceasefire deal, or it will be the “end” of the Palestinian movement. The US president said members of Hamas were “born with rifles in their hands, but they have to give up their weapons, but if they don’t do that, it will be the end of them.”
He also suggested that fresh talks with the Iranian regime could be on the table after the US carried out airstrikes against Tehran’s nuclear facilities in June. “We obliterated Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity with Operation Midnight Hammer. They were two months from having a nuclear weapon,” he said.
‘Iran does want to talk, and we’ll talk,’ he said while delivering remarks at this Board of Peace event. “We have also hit ISIS in Syria. In my first administration, I took out Al-Baghdadi, the founder of ISIS. We hit it very hard in Syria. I spoke with the President (in Syria), he’s making tremendous progress.”
He said that threats to Europe and America were coming down. “It’s a lot different from what it was one year ago. The world was actually on fire. In Nigeria, we are annihilating terrorists who are killing Christians. They have killed thousands of Christians. Much of this progress is possible because I rebuilt our military in the first term and we’re making it even stronger with a budget of over a trillion dollars,” he stated.
