In another inhuman treatment raising outrage among animal welfare activists, about 100 dogs were poisoned to death in the Yacharam village of Rangareddy district, just 50 kilometers away from Hyderabad. The incident was reported just days after nearly 500 dogs were killed in Telangana.

According to the reports, the police suspect that the killings have been carried out by professionals at the behest of the village sarpanch and his aides.

The police action came following a complaint filed by Mudavat Preeti of the Stray Animal Foundation of India regarding the incident. The police have registered a case against three people, including the sarpanch, under Sections 3(5) and 11(1)(a)(i) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act. The ward member and the village secretary are also named in the complaint.

The killings reportedly occurred on January 19. The police suspect that after poisoning the dogs, their bodies were buried outside the village, The Times of India reported. The Sarpanch and two others have reportedly been arrested.

According to SHO Nandeshwar Reddy, “We are investigating the matter seriously. We are trying to find the place where the dogs were buried.”

The incident came to light after several dogs suddenly started to disappear from the village. On questioning the villagers about the disappearance, they started giving contradictory statements, which raised suspicions.

It was suspected that the dogs were killed with poisonous injections, the complainant said. However, during a phone conversation, a ward member Adulapuram Gautam revealed that the dogs were first given anesthetic injections and then injected with a poisonous substance, leading to their death.
