Amid Donald Trump’s tariff threat linked to Greenland, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said that Denmark would continue diplomatic engagement with the United States, citing a new agreement reached Wednesday by Denmark, Greenland, and the US to establish a working group.
“The US is also more than the US president. I’ve just been there. There are also checks and balances in American society,” Rasmussen stated.
European Union ambassadors broadly agreed on Sunday to step up efforts to persuade US President Trump not to impose tariffs on European allies, while also preparing countermeasures if the levies are enacted, Reuters reported, citing EU diplomats.
Trump said on Saturday he would introduce a series of escalating tariffs starting February 1 on EU countries, including Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, as well as Britain and Norway, unless the United States is permitted to purchase Greenland—an ultimatum that leading EU nations condemned as blackmail.
