India’s Deepthi Jeevanji clinched the gold medal in the women’s 400m T20 event at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan, on Tuesday, clocking a Games record time of 56.36 seconds. The 23-year-old from Telangana finished ahead of Japan’s Niina Kanno, who took silver in 58.92 seconds, while her compatriot Akane Kato claimed bronze in 1 minute and 0.26 seconds.

Jeevanji thus successfully defended her title having also won the gold at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Jeevanji, a Paralympic bronze medallist in the same event, is also a two-time medallist at the Para World Championships. She won gold in 2024 and secured silver in 2025.

Her 2024 world title came with a world-record performance of 55.07 seconds.

Jeevanji’s journey in athletics began when she was 15, after Sports Authority of India coach N Ramesh spotted her talent at a state-level athletics meet and took her under his wing.

She made her international debut at the Asian Youth Championships in Hong Kong in 2019, winning a bronze medal.

She continued to compete in events organised by the Athletics Federation of India between 2019 and 2022, building on her early success.

At the Khelo India Youth Games 2020 in Guwahati, she won gold medals in both the 100m and 200m events. She also collected multiple medals at the National Junior and Youth Championships, achievements that earned her recognition as a Khelo India Athlete.

Jeevanji further established herself on the international stage at the Asian Para Games 2022, where she won gold and set Games and Asian records.

She later claimed the 400m T20 bronze medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games.

The T20 classification is for athletes with intellectual impairments, who may face challenges in processing information, maintaining concentration and executing race plans or tactical strategies.

Jeevanji’s latest triumph adds to her growing list of international and domestic achievements, which also includes gold medals at the Indian Open in 2025 and 2026.
