The government on Friday (January 16) has ordered to block links of 242 websites related to illegal online betting and gambling in the country. This is the biggest action taken by the government so far after the enactment of the ‘Online Gaming Act’. This step has been taken to protect the youth from financial and social losses. According to media reports, “There has been a huge increase in enforcement actions since the Online Gaming Act was passed in Parliament. So far, more than 7,800 illegal betting and gambling websites have been shut down.” The government aims to crack down on platforms that mislead people by luring them with quick money. The law on online gaming was made in August. Under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025, real money gaming has been banned in the country. This bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on 20 August and the Rajya Sabha on 21 August. After getting the President’s approval on August 22, it has now become a law. WHO also considered gaming disorder as a serious disease. Addiction to betting and gambling is not only an Indian but a global problem. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified gaming disorder as a health condition. According to WHO, it is a pattern in which a person loses control over the game, starts neglecting daily activities and continues playing despite harmful consequences. Efforts to stop youth addiction According to the government press release, illegal online money gaming platforms have caused widespread harm to the society. Many families have lost their entire savings, while many youth have become victims of its addiction. In some cases, incidents like suicide due to financial constraints have also been reported. Recognizing these dangers, the government has taken this tough step. E-sports and creative economy will get a boost. The purpose of the new law is not just to impose restrictions, but also to create a balance.
