According to the report presented in the Parliament of the Central Government, while the number of people filing zero tax returns increased by 15% in the last 4 years, the number of tax payers increased by 50.4%.

A total of 6.72 crore returns were filed in 2020-21. Of these, 4.84 crore were zero tax filers i.e. they had no tax liability. Whereas, 1.88 crore people had paid tax. At the same time, in 2024-25, zero tax filers became 5.58 crore, but the number of tax payers reached 2.82 crore.

In the year 2020-21, 72% of the total returns were zero filers, which reduced to 66% in 2024-25. At the same time, the share of tax payers increased from 28% to 34%.

According to experts, trust in the tax system has increased due to AI, faceless assessment and simplicity of income tax laws. Tax payers who earlier used to indulge in tax saving strategies are now paying taxes directly.

After Covid, the effect of increase in income from salaries, business and MSMEs is also visible in tax collection. Corporate profits have increased significantly in the last five years. Its effect is being seen in the increase in the number of people filing income tax returns to pay taxes.

The. Zero filers increased more in the states

Zero filers increased faster in the states of the South, which are considered prosperous compared to the North. The number of zero filers in the new state Telangana tripled in five years. Zero filers became two and a half times in Kerala. It almost doubled in Tamil Nadu.

Experts: Most of the youth get their first job. Starting in Indian states like Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Even after the salary is reduced, PAN, bank account and PF deposits all start. They are also taking advantage of tax exemption. Therefore, zero filers increased rapidly there.

Haryana also in increase of taxpayers

Suddenly the number of tax payers in North India is increasing in the last five years. The reason is that people who did not pay taxes till now are also coming forward to pay taxes. If we look at the increase in tax payers, Haryana is at the top. Gujarat is at second place and Bihar is at third place. Madhya Pradesh is at number 7 in this list.

Experts: With the increase in the scope of tax exemption, people are now beginning to feel that they can avoid income tax hassles in future by declaring their income. Therefore, 1 crore taxpayers increased in 5 years.
