Red Road has been closed since June 14.
The main program of Yoga Day is to be held on 21st June at Red Road, Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also participate in this. Red Road is closed since June 14 for its preparations.
All India Lawyers Union (AILU) filed a petition against this in the Calcutta High Court. It was said in the petition that due to the closure of the road, lawyers and common people are facing problems in commuting.
During the hearing, Justice Saugata Bhattacharya directed the state government to arrange alternative routes for the people till the Red Road remains closed. Also, the road should be opened immediately after the program is over.
TMC MP Mahua Moitra has opposed the closure of the road.
Government said- people will not face problems
Senior advocate Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya, appearing for the petitioners, said – instead of closing the entire road, a part of it could have been kept open. Due to this people do not have to travel long distances.
The state government told the court that the Yoga Day program is being organized in collaboration with the Ministry of AYUSH. There are many alternative routes in the area. People will not face any problem.
The court has directed the state government to file an affidavit within three weeks. After this the next hearing of the case will take place.
Controversy over the presence of employees
Meanwhile, officers and employees of the West Bengal government have also been asked to participate in the Yoga Day programme. State employee organizations have expressed objection regarding this.
However, during the hearing, the court said that it is not written anywhere in the order that participation in the program is mandatory. The state government also said that the employees have only been requested to participate in the program.
Yoga will be held on 500 boats in Hooghly
Around 35 thousand people are expected to participate in the main event to be held on Red Road. Apart from this, preparations are also being made to perform yoga on more than 500 boats in the Hooghly river.
According to sources, an attempt will be made to create a new Guinness World Record through this. Officials of Sundarban Boats Association said that they have received an invitation from the State Transport Department to participate in the program. To make the event memorable, yoga postures can also be done using boats in the river.
