Cast – Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, Rashmika Mandanna Director – Homi Adajania Duration – 2 hours 30 minutes Rating – 3.5/5 ‘Cocktail’, which was released 14 years ago, presented the complications of friendship, love and relationships in a new style. Now director Homi Adajania has brought ‘Cocktail 2’. This time the story is more mature than before. The film talks not about finding love, but about the difficulties of preserving love. This is the reason why its story seems to be connecting with today’s youth and people living in long relationships. How is the story of the film? Kunal (Shahid Kapoor) and Dia (Rashmika Mandanna) have been together for many years. Their relationship looks stable from outside, but inside there are many unspoken questions. Both of them start diverging in their thinking regarding marriage, career and future. During this time, Ellie (Kriti Sanon) enters his life. Ellie’s presence not only disrupts the relationship, but also forces all three characters to confront their decisions and emotions. The good thing about the film is that it does not try to prove any one character right or wrong. The story progresses slowly and touches on aspects of relationships that most people go through at some point. How is the acting of the star cast? Shahid Kapoor has played the character of Kunal with great ease. There are not many noisy scenes in his part, but he leaves an impact in the emotional scenes. Rashmika Mandanna’s work is also good. He has portrayed the complications and confusion of his character on screen in a natural manner. Kriti Sanon emerges as a strong link of the film. Her character is not limited to just glamour, but opens many layers as the story progresses. The chemistry between the three actors makes the film believable. Direction and technical side? Homi Adajania has always given a different visual treatment to relationship based films and the same is seen here too. The pace of the film remains balanced in most parts. The dialogues do not seem artificial and in many places reach straight to the heart. The beautiful locations of Sicily make the film attractive. The cinematography is superb and many scenes remain memorable for a long time. The costumes and production design also strengthen the atmosphere of the story. However, the second half of the film feels a little long at some places. Had some emotional scenes been kept shorter, the impact could have been better. There are some twists which can be predicted in advance. How is the music of the film? Pritam’s music goes with the mood of the film. The songs become a part of the story rather than dominating it. The background score also enhances the emotional scenes. Although there are no songs on the album that stay with you long after the film is over, the use of songs within the story is effective. Final Verdict: Watch the movie or not? ‘Cocktail 2’ is a film to understand and feel the complexities of relationships. It does not make big claims nor does it give easy answers to every question. Despite some weaknesses, strong acting, beautiful visuals, and emotional honesty make this a good weekend watch. If you like movies based on relationships then this movie will not disappoint you.
