At least 11 people have died, and several others were injured after a bus and a truck crashed head-on on a federal highway in southern Brazil on Friday, authorities said.
The deadly collision took place around 11:30 am local time in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s southernmost state, according to a statement from the Federal Highway Police.
Rescue teams were called to the scene, and seven people who were hurt were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Emergency workers faced challenges in accessing the bus because some of the truck’s sand cargo spilt into the passenger vehicle after the impact, complicating the rescue effort.
Officials have not yet released details on what caused the vehicles to collide, and investigations into the exact circumstances are expected to continue.
