Under the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, rooftop solar systems have so far been installed in 25 lakh houses. This scheme was started on 13 February 2024. Under this, 300-300 units of free electricity is available.

Under this scheme, families installing roof top solar panels also get an annual income of Rs 15,000. The government wants to connect 1 crore houses with this scheme. We are telling you about this scheme…

How much will it cost to set up a solar plant? In this scheme, 60% of the cost of solar plant up to 2 KW for every family will come in the account in the form of subsidy. Whereas if someone wants to set up a 3 KW plant, then 40% subsidy will be available on an additional 1 KW plant.

Setting up a 3 KW plant will cost around Rs 1.50 lakh. Out of that, the government will give a subsidy of Rs 90,000 thousand. The government has made arrangements for a cheap bank loan for the remaining Rs 60. Banks will be able to charge interest only 0.5% more than the repo rate. Currently the repo rate is at 5.25% i.e. you can get loan at 5.75% interest.

Who can take advantage of this scheme?

  • Only domestic (residential) consumers i.e. people who use electricity in their homes.
  • Apartments or housing societies can also apply for common areas (lift, light, pump etc.).
  • There should be space to install solar panels on the roof of your house and the roof should be your own.
  • Not for commercial, factory or office connections.

What needs to be done to set up a solar plant?

Government for the scheme National Portal Has been launched. To get it installed, you can apply by visiting the consumer portal. Here you will have to fill information like your consumer number, name, address and how much capacity plant you want to set up.

Discom companies will verify these details and take the process forward. Many vendors are already registered on the portal who install solar panels. You can choose any vendor as per your convenience. After the panels are installed, the discom will install net metering.

Documents required for the scheme

  • Aadhar card
  • Address proof
  • electricity bill
  • mobile number

How will subsidy be available after installation of solar plant? When the solar plant is installed and the discom installs net metering, its proof and certificate will be uploaded on the portal. After this, the government will transfer the entire amount of subsidy under DBT to the consumer’s account.

Will 300 units of electricity be available free in this scheme? A 1 KW solar plant produces about 4-5 units of electricity daily. In such a situation, if you install a 3 KW plant, then about 15 units of electricity will be generated daily. That means 450 units a month. You can use this electricity. The remaining electricity will go back through net metering and you will also get money for this electricity. The government says that you can earn around Rs 15,000 in a year from this electricity.
