The Honourable Prime Minister of the nation, Shri Narendra Modi, sent his wishes to Indian GM Koneru Humpy following her bronze-medal clinching performance at the FIDE Rapid Championships in Doha, Qatar on Sunday.

Humpy, who won the world rapid title in 2019 and 2024, was edged out by Zhu Jiner and Aleksandra Goryachkina on tie-breaker rules on the podium, while Arjun Erigaisi earned 9.5 points and secured bronze in the men’s section.

“Congratulations to Koneru Humpy, who finished strongly at the 2025 FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship in Doha, securing the Bronze medal in the women’s section,” Modi’s post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, read.

“Her dedication towards the game is commendable. Best wishes for the endeavours ahead,” the Premier added.

Humpy scored 69, 74, and 2335 in these parameters, whereas Zhu (72.5, 77.5, and 2410) and Goryachkina (71.5, 77, and 2360) ranked higher, contending for the top position.

Goryachkina, the highest-rated Russian woman in chess history and the 2023 Women’s Chess World Cup winner, defeated Zhu 1.5/0.5 in the tie-breaker to claim her first world rapid title and a 40,000 Euro prize.

Humpy’s compatriot and former World Rapid bronze medallist, young B Savitha Shri, fought valiantly in the 11th and final round, drawing the match with Humpy.

Had Humpy secured the full point, she would have finished with nine points, making history as the first woman to win three world rapid titles.

Humpy missed a winning move, and the 18-year-old Chennai chess prodigy, playing with the white pieces, forced a draw after 64 moves.
