The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has warned actor-turned-politician Vijay that it may reconsider support for his party if the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) joins an alliance with him ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The remarks came from CPI(M) state secretary P. Shanmugam, who said the party would review its political stance if Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) aligns with AIADMK, citing ideological differences and past political positions.
The statement follows speculation over a possible alliance between TVK and AIADMK as political parties in Tamil Nadu begin positioning themselves for the upcoming state polls. Vijay formally launched TVK earlier this year and has sought to build a broader opposition front.
Speaking on the issue, Shanmugam indicated that CPI(M) was open to supporting forces opposed to the ruling dispensation but stressed that any partnership involving AIADMK would force the Left party to reassess its position.
The development highlights growing uncertainty around opposition equations in Tamil Nadu, where parties are exploring alliances that could challenge the dominance of the two major Dravidian camps.
Vijay, one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars, has emerged as a significant political figure since entering electoral politics, with his party expected to contest the next Assembly election aggressively.
