Ethiopia on Tuesday gave its highest honor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has become the first global leader to receive ‘The Great Honor Mark of Ethiopia’. On this occasion, the PM said that this honor is a matter of pride for me. Today is the second day of his visit to Ethiopia.
Earlier yesterday, Modi was formally welcomed by PM Abiy Ahmed Ali at Ethiopia’s National Palace, where the two leaders held a bilateral meeting.
During the meeting, Modi said that he felt very happy to come to Ethiopia. The PM said that this is his first visit to Ethiopia, but as soon as he reached here he felt a sense of belonging.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Ahmed Ali had arrived to receive PM Modi at Addis Ababa airport yesterday. Both the leaders held informal talks at the airport itself. During this, PM Ahmed Ali also served traditional coffee to Modi.
After this, Ahmed Ali himself drove the car and took Modi to the hotel. He also showed Modi the Science Museum and Friendship Park on the way. This is PM’s first visit to Ethiopia. He is here on a 2-day state visit.

PM Ali praised Modi’s thinking
Ethiopian Prime Minister Ahmed Ali praised PM Modi’s thinking during the bilateral meeting on Tuesday. He said that Prime Minister Modi always says that partnership with Africa should be according to its needs.
He said that today there is a need for a new and stronger partnership between India and Ethiopia. Ahmed Ali said that foreign investment in the country is also increasing rapidly and India has emerged as the largest investor in it. He said that more than 615 Indian companies are investing in Ethiopia.
In the meeting, Modi announced doubling of scholarships for Ethiopian students. Also thanked for the condolences on the Pahalgam terrorist attack and India’s support against terrorism.
India is Ethiopia’s second biggest trade partner
India is Ethiopia’s second biggest trade partner. There was trade worth Rs 5175 crore between the two countries in 2023-24. During this period, India exported Rs 4433 crore and Ethiopia exported Rs 742 crore.
Ethiopia imports iron, steel, medicines and pharmaceuticals, machinery and equipment from India. India imports pulses, precious stones, vegetables and seeds, leather and spices from Ethiopia.
Trade relations between India and Ethiopia began in the 1940s. Business between the two had started even before independence. Formal trade between the two countries began after diplomatic relations were established in 1950.
