The Biden government in the US has lifted the ban on selling dangerous weapons to Saudi Arabia. According to news agency Reuters, the US is transferring air-to-ground attack weapons to Saudi Arabia. In view of this, the US State Department has lifted the ban.

In fact, in the year 2021, civilians were dying in Saudi’s war against Yemen’s Houthi rebels. To protest against this, the US had imposed sanctions on it. After this, in 2022, an agreement was reached between Yemen and Saudi with the mediation of the UN. After this, Saudi stopped carrying out airstrikes there.

America said – Saudi Arabia fulfilled its part of the promise
The US official said on Friday that Saudi Arabia has fulfilled its part of the deal and now we will keep our promise. According to US law, before supplying large weapons to any country, approval from the Parliament has to be taken.

Leaders of both the Democratic and Republican parties have often questioned the supply of arms to Saudi Arabia, raising the issue of human rights violations in Yemen. However, this opposition has decreased after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Last year, an agreement was reached between Saudi and Houthis
In April last year, a ceasefire agreement was reached between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. According to Al Jazeera, Saudi and Omani delegations met Mehdi al Mashat, the head of the Houthi rebels who occupy most of Yemen. Both sides stressed on establishing peace in Yemen.

According to BBC, it was decided in the agreement that Yemen will be rebuilt together after the 9-year war. Government employees will be paid salaries. All airports and ports will be opened. All external forces will be removed from the country.

Civil war started in Yemen in 2014
Houthi rebels in Yemen overthrew the Saudi-backed government in 2014. After this, in 2015, the Saudi-led military alliance opened a front against the Iran-backed Houthis. Hundreds of people died in this war. After this, 80% of Yemen’s population became dependent on humanitarian aid.

The main reason for the civil war in Yemen was the Shia-Sunni conflict. In fact, 35% of Yemen’s total population is Shia while 65% are Sunnis. According to the report of the Carnegie Middle East Center, there was always a conflict between the two communities, which turned into a civil war when the Arab revolution began in 2011.

Within a short time, the rebels known as Houthis took over a large part of the country. In 2015, the situation had become such that the rebels forced the entire government to go into exile.
