Fans of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg staged protests outside the jail that turned violent when unidentified persons started hurling stones at the van bringing in the accused

Violence and arson unfolded outside Assam’s Baksa District Jail on Wednesday as a mob attacked a police convoy carrying five persons accused in the Zubeen Garg death case.
Fans of Zubeen Garg, the Assamese cultural icon, gathered outside and on the route to the jail staging protests that turned violent when unidentified persons started hurling stones at the van bringing in the accused.
The five accused in the case — main event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen Garg’s Manager Siddharth Sharma, his cousin Sandipan Garg (suspended APS officer) and two PSOs Nandeswar Bora — were remanded to judicial custody and lodged in the Baksa jail.

Demanding justice for Garg, protesters torched at least three police vehicles while tyres and other vehicles were set on fire on the way to the jail. Some police personnel and mediapersons were injured in the stone-pelting incident. Protesters breached barricades, following which police resorted to using tear gas shells and fired blanks in the air to disperse them.
