Former West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC leader Mamata Banerjee on Sunday questioned the heavy deployment of security personnel outside her Kolkata residence ahead of her planned visit to Baruipur, where the body of a missing teen was recovered.

Banerjee stated that she had planned to go to Baruipur to meet the 11-year-old girl’s family.

“What happened that so many police are posted here. I wanted to go to Baruipur and meet the family. They have placed so many police outside my residence. Why? Are they trying for house arrest,” Banerjee said.

TMC Slams Police Deployment

Central Forces and police personnel were deployed outside the ex-CM’s Kalighat residence before her proposed visit to meet the victim’s family. The deployment came amid heightened tensions following protests over the alleged rape and murder of the child in South 24 Parganas district, PTI reported.

The TMC alleged that barricades and several police vehicles had been stationed outside Banerjee’s residence, as well as near the home of the party’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, in an attempt to prevent her from leaving.

In a post on X, the TMC said, “BJP’s only agenda — choke the opposition. Restrict their voices. Restrict their movement. Restrict their democratic rights. With heavy police deployment, route marches are suspiciously being conducted right outside the residences of our Hon’ble Chairperson @MamataOfficial and our Hon’ble National General Secretary @abhishekaitc.”

“This is an alarming situation and raises serious questions. It appears to be nothing more than a deliberate and cowardly display of intimidation by the @BJP4Bengal Government, driven by someone’s insecurity and pettiness,” it added.

BJP Reacts

However, the BJP dismissed the allegations, calling them an attempt to create unnecessary controversy. State BJP chief spokesperson Debjit Sarkar said the TMC leader was a Z-plus protectee and questioned what was unusual about police deployment outside her residence.

“The TMC is trying to enact a drama and make an issue out of a non-issue. When the former chief minister’s favourite PSOs were replaced with new personnel, the TMC protested then too. She is a Z-plus category protectee. If police are patrolling outside her residence, what is wrong with that? Has she or her party been told by the administration that she cannot step outside her residence?” Sarkar told PTI.

The security arrangements come following the recovery of the girl’s body from Baruipur, sparking protests, the lynching of a man accused by locals, and the arrest of four people in connection with the case.
