India’s most trusted automobile company Tata Motors has added another new chapter in its 80 years of history. On 13 October 2025, the name of the company has been changed to ‘Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited’. This change is not just a name change, but a historic step that will decide the future direction of the company.
This step is part of Tata Group’s long-term plan under which the company is dividing its passenger and commercial vehicle business into separate units. Now where the business of passenger vehicles, SUVs, electric vehicles and Jaguar Land Rover will be set up as a new unit. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited (TMPVL), while the responsibility of commercial vehicles like trucks, buses and pickups will be with TML Commercial Vehicles Limited (which will soon change its name to Tata Motors Limited).
This demerger (splitting) of Tata Motors has become effective from 1 October 2025, which was approved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) Mumbai Bench through orders passed on 25 August 2025 and 10 September 2025. Shareholders who held Tata Motors shares on the record date of October 14, 2025, will now get one share each in both the new units (passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle companies).
For the fourth time in 80 years

2003: A turning point, when TELCO’s name was changed to Tata Motors Limited. At that time, Ratan Tata had said, “Tata Motors defines the work that we actually do.”
And now, 2025 In 2017, Tata Motors has divided itself on two different paths. So that each segment can fly according to its potential.
New structure, new vision
- Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited: It will be home to car, SUV, EV and luxury JLR brands.
- Tata Motors Limited (New Unit): Will manufacture trucks, buses and commercial vehicles.
Tata’s demerger is the beginning of a new era. While the passenger vehicle division will lead the country’s electric transition, the commercial vehicle division will move forward to remain the strength of India’s infrastructure.
