Canada has given great respect to the martyrdom of Sikh leader Jaswant Singh Khala, who raised his voice for human rights. The Government of British Columbia province has officially declared Jaswant Singh Khalda Dey on 6 September.

This announcement was made on the 30th anniversary of his disappearance. On the other hand, the film “Punjab-95” made in India is stuck in the clutches of censorship and there is a demand to put 127 cuts on that film.
Government of British Columbia announced
The British Columbia government has said in its letter that Jaswant Singh Khalda was an internationally respected human rights protector and it is a matter of pride for the people of British Columbia to keep his memory alive. The province’s Lieutenant Governor Wandy Kokia signed this document and declared Jaswant Singh Khalra Dey on 6 September.
Directed by Anurag Singh, the film reflects the life and struggle of Jaswant Singh Khala. But the film has been conditioned for 127 cuts before the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) passed.
People associated with the film and human rights activists are calling it an attack on freedom of expression. He says that Khalda’s life struggle is based on truth, and if censorship is imposed on his story, it will be injustice to both justice and history.

Khalda went missing on 6 September 1995
Jaswant Singh Khalda had exposed incidents such as fake encounters and secret cremation in Punjab in the 1980s and 90s. He revealed that thousands of innocent Sikh youths were killed without a legal process and their dead bodies were burnt in cremation like unknown bodies. His discoveries attracted the world attention to human rights abuses in Punjab internationally.
But on 6 September 1995, he was abducted in broad daylight and was later murdered. From that time, he became a voice of resistance and justice to the Sikhs.
