India-US Ties: In his first direct reaction to Donald Trump’s remarks in recent days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that he “deeply appreciates and fully reciprocates” the US President’s “positive assessment” of India-America ties — which he described as “very positive and forward-looking”.
This comes hours after Trump dialled down on his recent sharp tone against India on Friday and said that he “will always be friends with Modi”, underlining that India and the United States have a special relationship.

“Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump’s sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership,” PM Modi posted on X, reacting to a post by news agency Yearswhich reported Trump’s remarks on India and PM Modi during his interaction with reporters at the White House.
PM Modi also tagged Trump on his X post.

What Did Donald Trump Say?
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday, Trump not only walked back on his “lost India to China” remark that he made on Truth Social, he also said that there is “nothing to worry about” in the India-US ties — which have recently seen tensions due to his 50% tariffs and criticism of New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
“Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest, China. May they have a long and prosperous future together! President Donald J. Trump,” he had posted on Truth Social yesterday.
Hours later, he backtracked on his post and said, “I don’t think we have. I’ve been very disappointed that India would be buying so much oil from Russia. I let them know that. We put a very big tariff on India- 50 per cent, a very high tariff. I get along very well with (PM) Modi, as you know. He was here a couple of months ago; in fact, we went to the Rose Garden and had a press conference.”
In what can be viewed as his softening stance on India after weeks of hard talk, he said that he will always be friends with PM Modi, stressing that the two countries have a “special relationship”.
“I always will, I will always be friends with Modi, he is a great Prime Minister, he is great… I just don’t like what he is doing at this particular moment, but India and the United States have a special relationship. There is nothing to worry about,” he said.
India-US Tensions And Trump’s Changing Tone
India-US ties have seen tensions after Trump imposed 50% tariffs on India, and his White House officials went on an anti-India tirade on social media and in television interviews.
The US accused India of feeding Russia’s “war machine” in Ukraine and went as far as this, saying Moscow’s aggression was “Modi’s war”.
Trump also claimed credit on numerous occasions for the India-Pakistan ceasefire in May, despite PM Modi’s clear statement in the Parliament that “no world leader asked India to stop Operation Sindoor”. However, lately, Trump has toned down on his remarks and has not mentioned the India-Pakistan truce while mentioning “stopping seven wars” in the world — a departure from his usual trend of boasting to stop a “possible nuclear war” between the two rival neighbours.
