After 25 long years, Coventry City are finally back in the Premier League — and Frank Lampard is the man who made it happen.
A dramatic 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers F.C. sealed promotion, with Bobby Thomas rising highest in the 84th minute to head home a historic equaliser at Ewood Park.
That single moment ended a 9,113-day wait since their relegation in 2001.
Lampard’s Instant Impact
Lampard, who took charge in November 2024 after replacing fan-favourite Mark Robins, has overseen a remarkable turnaround. His calm, methodical approach steadied a club that had flirted with relegation not too long ago.
“You’re welcome,” Lampard joked post-match.
“I’m happy, of course I am, it should reflect on the players and the staff… We have enjoyed it, but the boys and everyone have worked so hard. The players are the ones who deliver.”
Under his guidance, Coventry found consistency — winning five consecutive games multiple times this season, a rare feat in their history.
From Chaos to Clarity
Behind the promotion is a story of survival. Since their 2001 drop, Coventry endured administration in 2013, fell as low as League Two, and were forced into controversial groundshares away from home.
Fan protests, ownership turmoil under Sisu, and years of instability defined their journey. A turning point came in 2023 when Doug King took over, restoring some much-needed stability.
Even then, heartbreak followed. A play-off final loss in 2023 and a semi-final exit the next season under Lampard only added fuel to the fire.
The Final Push
This season, that pain turned into purpose. Coventry surged clear at the top, leaving rivals like Ipswich Town trailing by 11 points with just five games left.
Now, with promotion secured, the Sky Blues have their sights set on the Championship title.
