A four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been set by Tamil Nadu Police to investigate the POCSO Act case against granite baron R Veeramani and handling of the investigation.

The development comes after two senior IPS officers, A Arun, ADGP, Tamil Nadu Police Academy, and N Kannan, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore, were placed on compulsory wait amid scrutiny of the handling of the case. Both officers were in key positions when the complaint against Veeramani first surfaced.

The case dates back to October 2025, when Chennai Police registered an FIR after receiving a complaint from Praveena Solomon, a state coordinator of an NGO working on child and women protection and anti-trafficking.

According to the FIR registered on October 7, 2025, an unidentified man had visited the NGO office a day earlier and handed over an envelope containing a written complaint and a 16 GB pen drive.

The complaint alleged that a man identified as Veeramani had sexually assaulted or harassed a minor girl inside a bedroom at the residence of a woman identified as Shanthi in Teynampet, Chennai. The pen drive allegedly contained video footage related to the incident.

The material was subsequently reviewed and handed over to the police along with the original envelope and complaint.

The case was registered under Sections 7 and 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Veeramani, along with his associates Mahendra Simhan and Shanthi, was named in the FIR.

The investigation was later expanded after a Special POCSO Court rejected a police closure report and directed that the probe continue. Police subsequently arrested Veeramani, Shanthi and Mahendra Simhan on August 29.

The investigation has since widened, with police identifying additional survivors and examining whether similar alleged offences took place over several years.

The SIT will now examine the allegations in detail, including the handling of evidence and the circumstances surrounding the earlier investigation.
