Around two dozen people, mostly children, were rushed to a hospital in Rajasthan’s Sikar after they complained of breathlessness, dizziness, and uneasiness, triggering fresh concern over the area’s worsening air quality, officials said on Sunday.
Initial accounts suggested they may have inhaled polluted air near the city’s industrial zone and the bus depot, both frequently flagged by local residents for heavy emissions. Prima facie, the cause of this is the burning of clothes in a nearby furnace, police said.
Neighbourhoods around Lal Bahadur School have reported persistent discomfort in recent weeks, blaming rising pollution levels for respiratory trouble and irritation.
Doctors said all those admitted are in stable condition. “In Sikar’s industrial area, initially the children noticed smoke, but no one took it seriously. Gradually, they developed breathing issues, sneezing and suffocation, which made them realise there was a problem,” Dr. Shivpal Singh from SK Hospital said while speaking to reporters.
Local authorities are examining the episode, but an official confirmation on the source of the pollution spike is still awaited.
