2 women die after C-sections at Rajasthan hospital, months after May tragedy

A second woman died at the New Medical College Hospital (NMCH) in Rajasthan within 24 hours of a previous postpartum death, raising fresh concerns over maternal complications, officials said on Sunday.

Reshma, 40, died on Friday night after developing kidney-related complications following her fourth Caesarean delivery at the hospital on October 14. Her family alleged medical negligence and administrative apathy.

The second death was reported around noon on Saturday, when Roshan Bairwa, a high-risk patient from Baran with severe anaemia, died following complications after a Caesarean delivery the previous night. She had been shifted to NMCH from a private hospital on Friday evening.

Hospital authorities, however, said Roshan’s death was unrelated to the kidney complications reported in Reshma’s case.

“Roshan was a high-risk patient who was referred here from a private facility on Friday evening. She suffered severe postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) following the C-section delivery. Despite a blood transfusion, doctors could not arrest the bleeding, and she succumbed at 11:30 am Saturday,” NMCH Superintendent Ashutosh Sharma said.

Sharma said Roshan died due to excessive blood loss caused by severe PPH, ruling out any link to acute kidney failure.

Officials said Roshan’s family submitted a statement declining an autopsy and further action. Her body was subsequently handed over to them.

Meanwhile, another woman, 30-year-old Anita, who developed kidney complications after a Caesarean delivery on Wednesday, remained under observation in the hospital’s super-speciality block. Her condition was reported to be stable, officials said.

A similar incident was reported at the same hospital in May, when 12 women developed acute kidney complications after childbirth, five of whom died.
