Mamta Kulkarni, who was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Rajasthan Film Festival, in a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, spoke openly about her film career, shooting of ‘Karan Arjun’ and her decision to distance herself from the industry. He told that during the shooting of ‘Karan Arjun’ in Alwar, he spent about a month with Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and the entire team. Mamta said that leaving the film industry was not a disillusionment for her, but a call to spiritual life that came from within. Mamta Kulkarni worked in 48 films in a film career spanning about 15 years. Mamta, who made her mark in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali and Hindi cinema, had distanced herself from the film industry during that period of her career. On returning to Rajasthan, he spoke openly about his sudden decision to leave the industry and his association with regional cinema. Question: You are being given the Lifetime Achievement Award on the soil of Rajasthan. How do you view this honour? Mamta Kulkarni: See, I have released 48 films and have had a film career of about 15 years. Luck also matters a lot in life. It was by the grace of God and blessings of Guru that most of the films in my career were hit or superhit. Therefore, when after so many years someone gives you a lifetime achievement honour, it is like remembering your entire journey. My film journey started from Tamil Nadu. My first film S. It was Chandrashekhar’s ‘Nunbargal’. After this, my second film was ‘Prem Shikram’, which gained a lot of popularity. He said that people had even built a temple in his name in Nellore and the news of it was published in Times Magazine. After this I came to Bollywood. My first Hindi film was ‘Tiranga’. Then she appeared in films like ‘Aashiq Awara’, ‘Krantiveer’, ‘Sabse Bada Khiladi’, ‘Andolan’, ‘Karan Arjun’, ‘Ghatak’ and ‘Naseeb’. So when today after so many years I am getting the Lifetime Achievement Award, it is a very emotional moment for me. Question: You have a deep connection with Rajasthan. Many of your films were shot here and a song from one of your very popular films was also shot in Rajasthan. How do you see this connection? Mamta Kulkarni: I love the food of Rajasthan. Gatte ki kadhi-rice and bajra roti are my favourites. Many of my films were shot in Rajasthan. Especially the shooting of ‘Karan Arjun’ was done in Alwar, where she stayed with Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan and other actors of the film for about a month. After this, the ‘Bholi Bhali Ladki’ part of ‘Sabse Bada Khiladi’ was shot in Jaipur. The shooting of ‘Naseeb’ took place at Umaid Bhawan Palace. So Rajasthan is not just a place for me, but is associated with many memories in my career. When I have returned to Rajasthan after so many years, I feel very good and emotional from inside. It feels as if I have come back to a part of my old journey. Question: Any special memory of shooting for ‘Karan Arjun’, especially with Shahrukh Khan or Salman Khan, that you would like to share with the audience? Mamta Kulkarni: Look, at that time we were all new. We were all moving forward in our careers and had a lot of enthusiasm and hunger to work hard. When an artist is new, he has a different energy to prove himself. 1995 was also a very special year for my career. About 11 of my films were released that year. ‘Andolan’ came, ‘Sabse Bada Khiladi’ came, ‘Baaji’ with Aamir Khan came, ‘Bekaboo’ came, ‘Karan Arjun’ came and after that films like ‘Ghatak’ also came. During the shooting of ‘Karan Arjun’ we all gave our best. We were new artists and we had a lot of hunger to do something good, to make our mark. We used to work very hard from morning till evening. Therefore, many memories of the shooting of that film are still with me. Question: At the peak of your career, you distanced yourself from the film industry. What happened? Mamta Kulkarni: There comes a time in life when you feel that you have to search for something else. A similar time came in my life also. A voice came within me regarding spiritual life. My Guru came into my life and after that my inclination towards spirituality started increasing. At that time, the Sultan of Brunei, one of the richest people in the world, sent a private jet for me on the birthday of his daughter Princess Hamida. The princess was my admirer. Once I went to Princess Hamida’s birthday in Brunei. I told him that I am coming for a show with Shahrukh in October, you also come. After this, when we went to show at Wembley Stadium in October, I was backstage. Then Ali Morani came running to me and said – Mamta, Mamta…. Princess Hamida whom you had called has come with her mother and full security. They had evacuated an entire part of the stadium for security. That experience was very different for me. I saw the glamour, fame and material life of the world very closely. Perhaps after that the search for spirituality within me became deeper. Question: Rajasthan Film Festival gives a big platform to regional cinema. How much do you think there is a need to encourage regional cinema? Mamta Kulkarni: Absolutely needed. A film is a film, no matter in which language it is made. I myself have worked in many languages. My third film ‘Shesh Bhonk So Do’ was in Bengali language. I was very busy at that time, but I had also received a letter from the President regarding the National Award asking you to come, we want to honor you. I myself have been a multilingual actress. My mother tongue is Marathi, but I have not done any film in Marathi yet. I have worked in many languages including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali. The beauty of India is that it has different languages, cultures and stories. Regional cinema brings forward these stories. Therefore, it is very important for regional films and artists to get a platform.
