The plains of Kashmir received the first snowfall of the season on Thursday. Light snowfall occurred in the plains of Shopian, Pulwama and Baramulla along with upper reaches of Anantnag, Budgam and Bandipora. Srinagar-Leh highway was closed due to accumulation of snow at Zojila Pass.
Due to snowfall in Kashmir, cold increased in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. The temperature in Delhi dropped to 4.5 degrees Celsius on Thursday, making it the coldest day of December in the last three years.
At the same time, a river froze due to snowfall near Keylong Udaipur Road in Lahaul-Spiti, Himachal Pradesh. The coldest was recorded in Tabo of Lahaul and Spiti on Wednesday night, where the temperature reached minus 11.3 degrees Celsius.
Amidst the cold in North India, it is raining in the South Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Heavy rain lashed many parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, forcing school holidays to be declared in Chennai and other districts.
