Vikram Bhatt believes that sometimes a director’s work does not get the recognition it deserves.

If a film is a hit, the stars get applause, but when it flops, the first person to be in the dock is the director. Vikram Bhatt considers this to be the biggest and oldest truth of the film industry. “We are paid to pick up the dead bodies of flop films,” he says. This is the experience of his four decade long career.

Vikram Bhatt, who gave a new identity to horror films in Hindi cinema, also saw flops along with superhit films. He worked with big stars, launched new artists, faced personal controversies and even went to jail.

Despite this, he believes that to survive in the industry, the most important thing is not success, but sticking to one’s principles. This is why he spoke openly about the star system, film credits, the reason for not working with Aamir Khan again, his struggles and controversies.

In today’s success story, let us know things related to Vikram Bhatt’s career and personal life.

From initial opportunity to creating a distinct identity

Vikram Bhatt grew up in a film environment and became involved in film production at an early age. In the initial phase, he learned the nuances of direction and created a distinct identity through his films. After romantic and thriller films, he experimented in the horror genre, which gave him a different position in the industry.

Films like ‘Raaz’, ‘1920’, ‘Shapit’ and ‘Haunted 3D’ made him a big face of horror films. His films proved that even horror can be successful at the box office on the basis of a strong story and treatment.

The difference between working with new and big stars as a director

In his long career, Vikram Bhatt has worked with big stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakraborty, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty as well as newcomers. According to him, both have their own merits. He told what is the difference between working with new and big stars as a director.

Vikram Bhatt says that new artists are not as trained or experienced as experienced artists. But they have a desire to learn, which many times stars do not have. Stars like to work in their own style, while the director sometimes wants to do something different.

Therefore both have their own benefits. Working with stars, the film gets a good opening and experienced actors. At the same time, with new artists one finds an enthusiastic person who has the passion to do something. Therefore both have their own advantages.

Vikram Bhatt believes that ultimately the responsibility of the film lies with the director. However, the credit for success and failure is not divided equally.

The responsibility of the film always lies with the director

Vikram Bhatt believes that whether there is a star or not, the responsibility of the film ultimately lies with the director. However, unfortunately, when a star’s film becomes a hit, the director does not get that much credit. He does the same amount of work, but the film is called a star hit.

He says that he is happy that the name of its director Aditya Dhar is also being taken in the case of the film ‘Dhurandhar’. Not only the actors but also the director is being discussed. Otherwise people often say that this is the hit film of such and such star. This is the biggest problem.

According to him, everyone works equally hard. But when a star’s film does not work, then the first thing that comes up is the name of the director who made a flop film even with such a big star. That’s why he jokingly says that the director is paid to pick up the corpse of a flop film. Everyone has a hit, but only the director is considered a flop.

Credit for hit goes to the star, blame for flop goes to the director

Vikram Bhatt says that this is not a new thing, but it has always been like this. Stars do many films together. If three of his four films become hits and your film flops, then people believe that the director must be lacking.

He says that people do not understand that it is not just the star that makes a film successful. Some writer writes the story, some gives good dialogues, some makes excellent scenes, good songs are made and proper publicity is done. Only then a star is formed. But when the film becomes a hit, people assume that only the star has done everything.

According to him, this has been true for years and cannot be changed. This is the reality of the industry, so there is no point in fighting it.

i always got my credit

Vikram Bhatt says that fortunately it never happened to him that someone else got his credit. Even while working with Aamir Khan, people used to say that Aamir always gets the credit, but ‘Ghulam’ gave him full respect too.

He says that no one ever said that the film was directed by Aamir Khan. He got as much credit as he should have. He also got full credit for ‘Awara Pagal Deewana’. Therefore he believes that he had good luck in this matter.

Why did you not work with Aamir Khan again?

Vikram Bhatt tells that the relationship between Mukesh Bhatt and Aamir Khan was not good at the time of ‘Ghulam’. Aamir probably did not want to work with him further. This was not a personal enmity, rather the nature of both of them was not matching.

He says that he used to work for Mukesh Bhatt and ‘Ghulam’ was also given to him by Mukesh Bhatt. In such a situation, she felt that if she leaves Mukesh Bhatt and goes with Aamir Khan, it would be disloyal. Later such an opportunity never came again. He went in another direction and Aamir Khan went in another direction.

A person who has faith in God cannot be unfaithful

However, this rarely happens in the film industry. Usually people are seen standing with big stars only. But Vikram Bhatt always stood with Mukesh Bhatt. When Vikram Bhatt was asked where did his strength and courage come from that he should not cheat anyone?

Vikram Bhatt says that he does not think that this requires any special courage or strength. He believes that a person who truly believes in God cannot do such things.

He tells that he had made ‘Ghulam’ for Mukesh Bhatt, which featured Aamir Khan. Before this, Mukesh Bhatt had given him his first film like ‘Jaanam’ and his first hit film like ‘Fareb’. They did not feel right to leave such a person just because he was getting work somewhere else.

He says that the person who changes relationships only after seeing the opportunity is a stone unturned and such people cannot last long in this industry. If you don’t have your own principles, you can’t go very far.

There were highs and lows in my career.

Vikram Bhatt says that his career has seen both highs and big lows. Sometimes six-seven films were hit in a row, and sometimes six-seven films were flopped in a row. Then again came the era of hit films and after that again the era of flop films.

He compares his career to the gait of a camel, which sometimes goes up, sometimes down. He says that perhaps now the upper hand has come again. Only God knows how long this will last. His only prayer is that this phase should continue for as long as possible.

If a film is made on my life, its name will be ‘Sangharsh’.

Vikram Bhatt says that if a film is made on his life, then its name should be ‘Sangharsh’. He has struggled for everything – personal life, film career and spiritual journey too. According to him, struggle has been his biggest identity.

My films are liked not at the time of release, but after the passage of time

Vikram Bhatt says that strange things happen with his films. When a film is released, people do not like it, but after a few years the same film becomes a cult classic.

He gives the example that at the time of release, ‘Raaz’ was given by some people as zero stars, some as one star and some as one and a half stars. But after a few years the same film started being called a classic. Similarly, when ‘Haunted’ was released, people criticized it a lot, but today the same people call it a classic.

He says that the film which is a classic today, was not a classic at the time of its release. And if a new film is successful today, then after four years it will also be called a classic. He explains this with a line in English – “Durability is acceptability.” That means, only that which stands the test of time is accepted. What does not last, dies with time.

Spent 70 days in Udaipur jail on fraud charges

There were not only film ups and downs in Vikram Bhatt’s career. His personal life was also in controversies many times. The most talked about thing was when he and his wife were arrested in an alleged fraud case.

Vikram Bhatt and his wife Shwetambari Bhatt were arrested in a ₹30 crore fraud and swindling case involving Dr Ajay Murdia, founder of Udaipur-based ‘Indira IVF’ Group. The allegation was that he took crores of rupees from investors in the name of making a biopic on Murdia’s late wife and the project was stopped midway. This arrest attracted media attention.

When Vikram Bhatt was asked whether he would have been targeted because of being a celebrity, he answered this question like this.

The matter became big because of being a celebrity

Vikram Bhatt says that he does not know whether he was targeted because of being a celebrity or not. But it is true that because of being a celebrity, everything becomes more discussed. It becomes the headlines in the newspapers and becomes a bigger issue than necessary.

He says that if the same incident had happened to a lesser known person, it might not have taken such a big turn. But now he cannot change his identity or his status, so he has to accept what it is.
