The change of power in Bangladesh is being linked to America.

It is April 2023. While giving a speech in the Bangladesh Parliament, Sheikh Hasina says, “If America wants, it can change the power in any country. If they form any government here, it will not be a government elected by the people.”

One year and three months after this statement of Hasina, on 5 August, she not only had to resign but also had to leave the country. Three days later, an interim government was formed in Bangladesh on Thursday night. The army has named this government as Advisory Council. Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammad Yunus has been made its chief.

The same Mohammad Yunus whom Hasina has been accusing of being a foreign agent. Yunus has good relations with America. In such a situation, questions are being raised whether America has played any role in Hasina’s coup. 3 reasons that point towards this…

1. Old rivalry between Sheikh Hasina and America
Date- 26 May, Place- Bangladesh PM residence. Sheikh Hasina had called a meeting of 14 parties. In this Hasina said- “A conspiracy is being hatched to divide some areas of Bangladesh and Myanmar and make a ‘Christian country’ like East Timor. Before the elections, a ‘white man’ had offered me that if I allow the construction of an army base within the borders of my country, then elections will be allowed to be held without any problems.”

Sheikh Hasina did not reveal the country and who the ‘white man’ was, but the needle of suspicion was pointed towards America. In fact, in June 2021, Bangla newspapers claimed that America is demanding St. Martin Island from Bangladesh. It wants to build a military base here.

After this, Bangladesh Workers Party President Rashid Khan Menon also said in Parliament that America wants to acquire St. Martin Island and is putting pressure to become a member of the Quad.

The island of St. Martin, which caused so much uproar in Bangladesh politics, is an island of just 3 square km. Its distance from Myanmar is just 5 miles. In June 2023, PM Hasina had said that if the opposition BNP party came to power, they would sell St. Martin.

Hasina had said that if she leases out St. Martin, she will have no problem running the country. But she cannot hand over the country’s land to any foreigner. However, after the uproar over St. Martin, America said that it has no desire to acquire this island.

The US had clarified the situation on St. Martin but it never made a statement about the Quad. However, China had definitely expressed concern about it. In April 2020, the Chinese Defense Minister had warned Bangladesh against joining the Quad. Later, Bangladesh clearly said that it would not join this group.

After this, tension between the US and Bangladesh started showing in their relationship. The US banned Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion in December 2021. This paramilitary force was formed in 2003 to stop terrorism, but was infamous for oppressing opposition leaders.

In 2023, the US imposed visa restrictions on several Bangladeshi leaders. The US argued that it would impose sanctions on anyone who undermines the election process in Bangladesh. In April 2023, Hasina clearly said that the US wants to change the government in Bangladesh. Relations between the US and Bangladesh have never been so bad in this decade.

2. American officials were meeting the leaders of the opposition party. Priyanka Singh of the Institute for Defense Studies and Analysis said that America has had influence in Bangladesh even before its formation. When Bangladesh was fighting for independence, America was supporting West Pakistan. America’s conflict with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Awami League has been there for a long time. Although Sheikh Hasina’s government maintained relations with America, they were not very good.

Before the elections in Bangladesh, there were common reports that American officials were meeting opposition leaders. They were also meeting leaders of the fundamentalist organization Jamaat-e-Islami Party. In such a situation, speculations are being made that America may also have a hand in the situation in Bangladesh. However, it cannot be claimed that America is completely behind the current situation in Bangladesh. Bangladesh’s domestic problems have also played a big role in the fall of the Hasina government.

3. America benefits from Muhammad Yunus coming to power
Priyanka Singh says that America can benefit from the change of government in Bangladesh. Mohammad Yunus has been associated with Western countries. He has worked a lot there. He is quite familiar with the American system. He can focus on American interests. If he is getting support from America, then it is not very surprising.

Mohammad Yunus has already received the Nobel Peace Prize. He has been awarded the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award. This award is funded by the Ford Foundation, which is a prestigious foundation of America. His proximity to America is not hidden from anyone. When he was threatened with death during the Hasina government, he took refuge in the American Embassy.

The US has also extended its support to the interim government of Bangladesh. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement that ‘We are keeping an eye on the situation in Bangladesh. Mohammad Yunus has been appointed the head of the interim government and we believe that the interim government will work to create stability and peace in Bangladesh.
