Support the family by selling peanuts

Jackie Shroff spent 33 years with his family in a small room in Mumbai’s Teen Batti Chawl. There were only three bathrooms for all the people in seven small buildings. Every morning there was a long queue outside the toilet. Jackie also had to wait for his turn with a mug in his hand.

The financial condition of the family was so bad that they used to eat food sitting on the floor and sleep on the floor. Once he was bitten by a rat while sleeping on the floor and his mother was also bitten by a rat. Sometimes a snake was also seen in the room. The financial condition of the house was so bad that Jackie had to leave school after 11th class. To support his family, he did various odd jobs, including selling peanuts.

Was wandering in search of job, got modeling offer

During the days of struggle, Jackie was standing at a bus stand in Mumbai, was searching for a job and the condition of the house was not good. Then an accountant of a modeling company offered her to become a model.

Due to financial constraints, Jackie accepted this offer. While modeling, she joined an institute to learn acting, where she met Dev Anand’s son Sunil Anand.

Impressed by Jackie’s physical attributes and acting skills, Sunil sent him to his father. In 1982, Dev Anand gave him a small role in a film ‘Swami Dada’, but the real break through came in 1983 from Subhash Ghai’s film ‘Hero’.

Jackie’s film ‘Hero’ was released on 16 December 1983. It was directed by Subhash Ghai.

Movies hit, still remain in trend

Even after the release of ‘Hero’, Jackie Shroff lived in Mumbai’s Teen Batti Chawl for five-six years. Despite becoming a star, he did not leave his old house for many years. Jackie himself told that he lived in the chawl for 33 years and even after the release of some of his hit films, he continued to live there. Not only this, even after marrying Ayesha in 1987, Jackie lived with his wife in the same chawl.

Big house, but distance from family

Later Jackie Shroff took a house on rent on Carter Road, Bandra. After this he built a luxurious eight-bedroom house in Khar West and shifted there with his family. Today he lives in a bungalow built in a luxurious area like Pali Hill.

Jackie often says that when he shifted from a small room and chawl life to a big house, the distance in the family also increased with it. After shifting to a bigger house, everyone got their own room, their own corner and their own privacy, due to which the time to sit together and talk got reduced.

Fell in love with Ayesha in film style

The love story of Jackie and Ayesha is no less than the story of a film. Jackie saw Ayesha for the first time in the bus. At that time she was 14-15 years old. Jackie was riding a friend’s bike behind that bus. Ayesha was coming from a march past and was standing holding the flag in the bus, holding the handle. At that very moment Jackie told himself that he would marry this girl.

Jackie Shroff married Ayesha Dutt (Ayesha Shroff) on 5 June 1987.

After Ayesha got down from the bus, Jackie met her and both of them talked for a while. A few days later, a friend of Ayesha contacted Jackie and told that Ayesha felt that she should consider acting. She also told about an audition being organized by filmmaker OP Ralhan. Jackie says- I did not get the role, but I fell in love with Ayesha.

However, after ‘Hero’, many of Jackie Shroff’s films like ‘Teri Meherbaniyaan’, ‘Kudrat Ka Kanoon’, ‘Karma’, ‘Tridev’, ‘Ram Lakhan’, ‘Parinda’ were hits. He received the Filmfare Best Actor Award for his powerful performance in ‘Parinda’. Later he was awarded the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for ‘1942: A Love Story’ and ‘Rangeela’ (1996).

Didn’t give up even after bankruptcy

Even after reaching the pinnacle of success, there came a phase in Jackie’s life when he became completely bankrupt. In 2003, Ayesha Shroff produced a black comedy film named ‘Boom’, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Gulshan Grover, Katrina Kaif and Zeenat Aman. The film flopped badly at the box office and the Shroff family incurred huge debts.

To repay this loan, Jackie had to sell his house and furniture. Jackie did not give up and started working twice as hard and returned the money to all the debtors. He kept his children Tiger and Krishna away from this financial crisis and did not let it affect them in any way.

Jackie Shroff’s father Kakubhai Shroff was an astrologer and his mother Rita Shroff worked at a clothing shop.

Jackie says- I was heartbroken after the departure of my brother and parents. Father passed away, but I had to go for shooting the next day. People were standing, the entire unit was waiting, so keeping my sorrow with me, I went there and worked. This is life.

Recovered the loss through smart investment

Jackie Shroff’s biggest success is the result of one of his smart investments. In 1995, when Sony Entertainment Television was being launched in India, Jackie decided to invest in it. This investment was so successful that after 15 years his return on every Rs 1 lakh became Rs 100 crore.

The returns from this investment compensated for all the losses incurred due to the failure of the ‘boom’. After 15 years he sold his shares and his relationship with Sony ended.

Talking about his success, Jackie Shroff says – For me, success is that someone listens to you and does some good work regarding your success. Meaning success is that you can benefit the coming generation. By giving them things we are eliminating.

Success is that a father can leave behind some things for his son and his son’s son, which will be useful for the coming generations. That is called success. Success is not just about earning money or fame. If you grow good vegetables and take care of that soil, that is also success.

I have preserved this soil for 30 years, which will be visible in future. So that is called success, the strength to leave something behind, which will help them grow further.

Earning money, earning name, wealth, all that is there, but we are small people, the real big ones are those kings who have palaces. Be happy, but what are you giving by giving, Guru? This is success.

If I say something and someone picks it up and implements it, that is success for me. Suppose I said, plant a tree, son!’ And if you put 10 in place of one, then that is success.

On the occasion of her 25th wedding anniversary, Jackie bought a luxurious 44,000 square feet farmhouse between Mumbai and Pune. This farmhouse is full of greenery, with more than 700 plants, swimming pool, fish pond, Akhara-style gym and also a Titanic Point.

Tree was planted in memory of mother

Even today Jackie Shroff is known for his looks and style, but he has not forgotten his roots. In his farmhouse he practices organic farming and cooks food in earthen pots in the traditional way. He had planted a tree 12 years ago in memory of his mother, which is still present in the farmhouse.

Wear clothes from cheap Khadi store, create a different style

Talking about his look and style, Jackie says – When I used to live in a chawl, I used to buy cloth for Rs 5-7 per meter from the Khadi store. He used to cut the strange material like curtains and make shirts. I liked odd things very much, because while walking on the road, I used to think that the dogs would bark ‘woof-woof’ just by looking at me. Yes, I look different. Not yelling at everyone, yelling at me. So by wearing such clothes, I myself became different.”
