President Donald Trump in America
- President Trump facing record decline in popularity, first election test tomorrow
November 5 is going to complete one year of President Donald Trump’s re-election in America. But a day before that i.e. on 4th November 2025, the biggest litmus test till date is going to happen for him. On this day, New York City will elect its new mayor and there will also be gubernatorial and assembly elections in the states of Virginia and New Jersey.
Over the past year, Trump has kept Republican supporters engaged with his economic and immigration policies, but dissatisfaction has increased among the general public. His net approval rating has fallen to -18% as of early November, well below both Obama and Biden’s first year. It was -3% at the end of Obama’s first year and -7% during Biden’s tenure.
Analysts believe that tariffs, inflation and a tough stance on immigration have driven away the middle class and urbanites. Now the challenge before Trump is whether these local elections will indicate the ‘national mood’ or whether local issues will win. From Washington to Virginia and New York, all eyes are on this Tuesday, because it will decide whether Trump’s second term is living up to the public’s expectations or not. Republicans are considering it as evidence of policy strength, while Democrats are calling it a ‘mini referendum’.
New York: Bharatvanshi Mamdani 14 points ahead in the most high-profile match

Zohran Mamdani: He is a youth leader of Indian origin, who is 33 years old and is also a member of the New York State Assembly. Zoharan is the son of Ugandan writer Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair.
- He is a Democratic Socialist and has strong support among progressive voters, youth, African-Americans and the Latinx community. He has not only made the rising cost of living in the city an issue in the election campaign, but has also promised to provide housing schemes for the poor by imposing taxes on the rich.
- Mamdani is ahead by a huge margin of 14 percent. Trump has warned Mamdani that if he becomes mayor, he will stop New York’s federal aid funding.

Andrew Cuomo: The 67-year-old is a former governor, who resigned four years ago due to sexual harassment allegations. He ran as an independent candidate. He is getting the support of Republicans and centrists.
- US President Trump supported Cuomo instead of his own party because he wants to stop Mamdani.
- New York is a stronghold of the Democrats. He has been dominating. Trump has described Cuomo as strategic and experienced, Cuomo has also been accused of corruption and sexual harassment.
- Cuomo’s election promise is that he will increase security in the city and maintain the established political system. However, Cuomo’s popularity in election surveys is less than Mamdani.
Governor elections of 2 states: Democrats ahead in Virginia and New Jersey, shutdown becomes a big issue here
Along with New York Mayor, governor elections are also being held in two Democrat states, Virginia and New Jersey. In Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanmbarger is leading Republican Winsome Sears by 7 points. The impact of government shutdown is a big issue here. At the same time, in New Jersey, Democrat Mickey Sherrill is ahead of Republican Jack Ciattarelli with a lead of 3 points. He has hit back at being called the ‘Trump of Trenton’ by making Trump policies like tariffs and shutdowns the main issue.
Trump’s move backfired: Anger is rising in the migrant areas due to ICE raids amid voting. The rapid action of ICE (Immigration) in New Jersey-Virginia has increased the anger among the migrant Latin community. The presence of federal agents and raids have tried to prevent local people from voting. ICE claims the raids focus only on criminal suspects. While the Democrats allege that this is a conspiracy to suppress Latin voter turnout. Experts believe that in many places in both the states this tension is turning into votes against Trump’s attempt to intimidate.
