Madhya Pradesh cabinet minister Vijay Shah is once again at the center of controversies. Her derogatory remarks against Colonel Sophia Qureshi of the Indian Army have created a political storm. The Madhya Pradesh High Court has taken automatic cognizance in this case and ordered to register an FIR against them. But this is not the first time Vijay Shah has made headlines due to his controversial statements or adventures. Shah, a 9 -time MLA from Harsud and 5 times a minister, has an old relationship with controversies. Whether it is a pornographic dance of Russian Belle dancers at the saint’s tomb, stop shooting for Vidya Balan’s film, or to break the rule in Satpura Tiger Reserve. His antics have raised questions again and again.
2010: Russian Belle dance at saint’s tomb, uproar
In February 2010, Vijay Shah gave rise to controversy at the fair organized at the tomb of the great saint donor of Nimar in Malgaon of Harsud assembly constituency of Khandwa district. In this fair, traditionally there were events according to rural culture, but the then minister Vijay Shah served obscenity by including Bollywood and Russian Belle dancers in it. ‘Aajtak’ first raised the matter prominently, which revealed that Shah defended the Russian Belle dance by calling it ‘rare culture of Russia’.
During the event, when ‘Aajtak’ questioned him about this dance program, Shah replied with a crooked laugh, “I don’t know how the Janpad Panchayat called foreign artists for such a small money? There would be controversy in it, the organizers should have taken care of it.” His rhetoric and laughter were clearly indicating that he himself was behind the event, but after sensing the situation, he put the responsibility on the district panchayat. When the news broadcast on ‘Aajtak’, the next day became a ‘government spokesperson’, Shah claimed, “The big artists of the country and the world are coming to the village like Khalwa, then they should welcome them. It is the wrong thinking of the media that he is presenting it wrongly. The people of the village also want entertainment, what is bad in this?” The event was strongly opposed by the local people, senior officials of the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The protest increased so much that Shah’s minister’s post was in danger. Finally, he somehow saved his chair by apologizing to the big leaders.
2020: Vidya Balan rejected dinner, Shah stopped shooting ‘lioness’
In the year 2020, Vijay Shah gave rise to another controversy with Bollywood actress Vidya Balan. At that time Shah was a Forest Minister in the Madhya Pradesh government. Vidya Balan was in the forests of Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh to shoot for her film ‘Sheri’. It is alleged that Shah invited Vidya for dinner, but Vidya turned down the proposal due to discomfort. The next day, shooting crew vehicles were stopped from entering the forest, causing the film unit to face a lot of trouble.
Minister Shah claimed in this case that Vidya had requested her for lunch or dinner, which she turned down. He said, “I said that it is not possible now, I will meet him on going to Maharashtra.” However, media reports revealed that the decision to cancel the shooting permit was made at the behest of Shah. This incident further tarnished his image.
2013: Comments on Shivraj’s wife, Gaya Minister post
In 2013, Vijay Shah was the Minister of Tribal Affairs. During an event in Khandwa, he made objectionable remarks about Sadhana Singh, wife of the then Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan. This statement created a lot of ruckus within and outside the BJP, due to which Shah had to resign from his ministerial post. However, after some time he was again included in the cabinet, but this incident caused permanent damage to his image.
T-shirt controversy in Jhabua: indecent remarks on girls
During an event in Jhabua, Vijay Shah made objectionable remarks while distributing T-shirts to the girls. He pointed to the girls and said, “Give them two or two, I don’t know what they wear below.” He was severely criticized on this statement and was declared insensitive and vulgar towards women. This incident once again questioned his behavior.
2023: Chicken Party in Satpura Tiger Reserve
In the year 2023, a video of Vijay Shah went viral on social media, in which he was seen partying chicken and dal-baati with his friends in the core area of Satpura Tiger Reserve. The event took place on the Rorighat Siddha Baba Pahadi in Narmadapuram district, where the employees of the forest department burnt the fire and cooked food. Under the Wildlife Protection Act, it is illegal to burn fire and party in the reserve sector.
RTI activist Ajay Dubey complained about the matter to senior officials of the forest department, after which the investigation started. In the video, Shah himself heard saying that this is the ‘most spectacular picnic’. Dubey alleged that Shah and his group saw a tiger in a banned area and their trains were standing close to the animal, a violation of wildlife rules. Investigation revealed that only the forest employees had arranged this party. However, the director of the Satpura Tiger Reserve claimed that no wild bird was killed and the employees bought a chicken from the market. There was no concrete action in this case, which raised questions on Shah’s arbitrariness.
2025: Grand comment on Colonel Sophia Qureshi
Recently, Vijay Shah addressed Colonel Sophia Qureshi as a ‘sister of terrorists’ at an event in Mhow in Indore district. This statement not only insulted the army, but also created anger across the country. The Madhya Pradesh High Court termed it as ‘dangerous’ and ‘language of gutter’ and ordered an FIR against them under sections 152, 196 (1) (b) and 197 (1) (c) of the Indian Code. Shah apologized and claimed that he respects Qureshi more than his sister, but the Congress demanded his resignation, calling it insufficient.
