In Sri Lanka, the police arrested Yoshita Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, on corruption charges. According to Daily Mirror, Yoshita is accused of buying property illegally when her father was the President. Mahinda Rajapaksa held the presidency from 2005 to 2015.

Yoshita is the second among the three sons of Mahinda Rajapaksa. Police spokesperson SSP Buddhika Manathunga said Rajapaksa was arrested in his home town of Beliatta. The Attorney General had on Saturday directed the CID to arrest Yoshita.

This whole matter is related to Daisy Forest. Daisy is the mother of Mahinda Rajapaksa. Yoshita is accused of having purchased a land in Mount Lavinia in the name of her grandmother. The police are investigating the money used to purchase that land. The matter is being investigated under the Money Laundering Act.

Rajapaksa family’s troubles increased after Dissanayake government came to power Yoshitha has been remanded till January 27 after being produced before a magistrate in Colombo. Last week, the Criminal Investigation Department had also questioned Mahinda Rajapaksa’s brother and former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the corruption case.

The troubles of the Rajapaksa family have increased since the government of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake came to power in November last year. Dissanayake had promised to send to jail all those accused of wrongdoing during Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presidency.

Last month, Rajapaksa’s eldest son and MLA Namal Rajapaksa was also questioned by the police in another property case. Earlier on Friday, Mahinda Rajapaksa had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking restoration of his security and intervention in this matter.

Government said – this is not an act of revenge Sri Lankan government minister Nalinda Jayatissa claimed that Yoshitha was not arrested simply because he is the son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Rather, he has been arrested because he has purchased land illegally.

He said that there is no political conspiracy behind the recent arrests. He said, “If anyone has purchased land or property illegally or in a suspicious manner and in such cases CID investigation is conducted.”

The minister said that the investigation that has started is continuing. Soon he will get bail. But, the trial will continue. It is the duty of the judiciary to enforce the law. The government only helps in this.

Yoshita is a former naval officer

Yoshitha Rajapaksa has served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Sri Lanka Navy. He has also served as Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Then he was also seen as an assistant to the President. Yoshitha has also been the former captain of the Sri Lanka national rugby union team and the Navy SC rugby team.

The Dissanayake government has significantly reduced the security of Mahinda Rajapaksa. Earlier there used to be 350 soldiers under Rajapaksa’s security, now only 60 are left. Rajapaksa claimed that his life was in danger from the LTTE. He has made Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, the Cabinet and the defense establishment defendants in the case.
