There is an atmosphere of fear and concern in Canada after US President Donald Trump’s recent actions in Venezuela. The US Army had recently entered Venezuela and captured its President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and brought them to New York. Meanwhile, Trump’s old statements and threats which he had given to make Canada the 51st American state came into discussion again.

An article published in the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail states that Canadians should take seriously the possibility that Trump may use military pressure against their country.

The author of this article and Canadian professor Thomas Homer-Dixon said that if any kind of military pressure is exerted against Canada, it should be clear that its cost will be very heavy.

Experts said- Canada is feeling unsafe

Like Canada, Trump also wants to merge Greenland with America. Experts believe that Greenland and Canada have many similarities. Both are democracies, based in the Arctic region and part of security organizations like NATO, over which Trump wants to dominate. For this reason Canada is feeling unsafe.

Wesley Wark, who has advised the Canadian government on security matters, said that many officials in Ottawa are still not ready to accept that the situation has changed so much. According to Wesley, Trump’s actions regarding Venezuela and Greenland are the last warning to Canada. These show that America is no longer the country it used to be.

Canada is reducing its dependence on America

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had started efforts to reduce dependence on America after coming to power. They are now focusing more on increasing trade with China. Carney recently said the sovereignty of Greenland and Denmark should be respected, but did not comment on Trump’s past threats to Canada.

Some experts say that it is difficult for the US to launch a direct military attack on Canada, but economic pressure can be exerted. Carleton University professor Stephanie Carwin said the US could now more easily harm Canada’s economy than ever before, if the President wished to do so.

He said that after Trump’s dominance over Venezuela’s oil resources, it is clear that America can be more aggressive to increase its dominance in the Western Hemisphere.

America can put pressure on Canada in return for help

Professor Philippe Lagasse of Carleton University expressed another apprehension. According to him, if Canada depends on the US in a major disaster or in a situation that it cannot handle on its own, the current US administration can set conditions in return for help. It is also possible that America may refuse to step down after providing help or may make demands in return.

Apart from this, the review of US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement may also draw Trump’s attention towards Canada again. This agreement was made during Trump’s first term and now it is to be reviewed. During this period, America can put economic pressure on Canada.

Currently, Canada depends on America for about 70% of its exports. Under the current agreement, about 85% of trade between the two countries happens without any tariffs. Experts say that even if Trump threatens to eliminate this exemption, it could cause huge damage to the Canadian economy.
